NUC7i5BNH no hdmi audio

NUC7i5BNH latest bios 0076, HDMI Firmware Update Tool 0.72 installed, latest graphics driver installed GFX_WIN10_64_24.20.100.6286_BN, Windows 10 1809 fully patched.

Intel Display Audio shown as working properly in Device Manager, selected as default device in Control Panel, but no sound output when Test button hit.

When Intel Display Audio driver version 10.22.1.100 (packaged with graphics driver GFX_WIN10_64_15.45.19.4678) is installed HDMI audio plays perfectly well.

I have been unable to find one graphics driver update since GFX_WIN10_64_15.45.19.4678 that has trouble free HDMI audio with my setup. Why does Display Audio driver version 10.22.1.100 work perfectly well while later Audio driver versions do not?

@rgord1 ,

  1. I assume that you have downloaded HDMI Firmware Update Tool version 1.72, rather than version 0.72. Have you updated the HDMI firmware using procedure in the HDM Firmware update instructions?
  2. Disconnect the NUC from Internet.
  3. Open the Device Manager and uninstall the current installed Graphic Driver (check the Delete option).
  4. Reboot your NUC.
  5. Open Device Manager and check if now Microsoft Basic Graphic driver appears in Display Adapters. If not, repeat again paragraphs 3 through 5.
  6. Install the latest Graphic Driver https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28208/Intel-HD-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-10-for-Intel-NU... .
  7. Reboot your NUC and reconnect the Internet connection.

Important:

Ensure that before updating the Graphic Driver (para. 1 - 7 above), you should have installed the Chipset Driver https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26801/Intel-Chipset-Device-Software-for-Intel-NUC-Kit-NUC7... and the Management Engine Driver https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28215/Intel-Management-Engine-Consumer-Driver-for-Windows-...

Thanks for the response.

  1. Yes, I should have said HDMI Firmware Update Tool version 1.72.
  2. Latest Chipset and ME drivers have been installed.
  3. Current Graphics driver was uninstalled, then latest graphics driver installed.

I have followed these procedures since I acquired this NUC and stayed with bios version 46 and graphics driver 4678 for some time because that was the only driver that maintained stable display audio. After updating bios, I am able to install latest graphics drivers (currently GFX_WIN10_64_24.20.100.6286_BN) but have to manually install display audio driver version 10.22.1.100 (packaged with graphics driver GFX_WIN10_64_15.45.19.4678) as it is the only audio driver that works consistently well with my setup.

When I install the audio driver that comes with graphics driver GFX_WIN10_64_24.20.100.6286_BN, I get no sound whatsoever through HDMI.

I was able to restore HDMI audio with a fresh install of Windows 10 1809. The NUC was already patched with latest bios 0076, HDMI Firmware Update Tool 1.72 installed. After installation latest chipset and ME drivers were applied.

Microsoft provided an Intel graphics display driver during the installation of Windows 10 that had a later date than GFX_WIN10_64_24.20.100.6286_BN, but there was no evidence of an Intel display audio device in control panel so it could not be configured.

I was able to uninstall the Microsoft-supplied graphics display driver along with its associated display audio driver from device manager, and install GFX_WIN10_64_24.20.100.6286_BN which now has stable audio. I do not need to manually install display audio driver version 10.22.1.100 any more.

I do not intend to update to the DCH driver as long as audio with GFX_WIN10_64_24.20.100.6286_BN remains stable

Hi @rgord1

  1. Currently in my NUCs I've have installed the latest Graphic DCH driver version 25.20.100.6577 . It is working without any problems. You may try to install it. However, be aware that the DCH driver is not back compatible with the legacy driver. If you will decide to go back and reinstall legacy driver, you need first to uninstall the DCH driver.
  2. If you decide to install this driver, follow the procedure from my previous post and install the DCH driver: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28567/Intel-Graphics-Windows-10-DCH-Drivers

Thanks. I installed the latest Graphics DCH driver, but same result. No HDMI audio. Fortunately I was still able to manually install display audio driver version 10.22.1.100 along with the DCH graphics driver, and audio with that still works perfectly well.
