NUC817HNK boots to unsuccessful POST attempt error

Updating the issue first reported in https://forums.intel.com/s/question/0D50P00004A6bM1SAJ/nuc817hnk-boots-to-unsuccessful-post-attempt-error

The NUC817HNK boots flawlessly when the two external USB hard drives are either unplugged or powered off. I may fiddle a bit to see if it's one or the other or only both drives, or if works with the drives in different USB ports.

Does this ring a bell for anyone?

Thanks.

So two instances of the same drive type (WD My Book 25EE).

Ok, Intel Customer Support will need to look at this issue (reproduce if they can) and then pass it up to the BIOS folks for investigation...

This doesn't ring any bells but raised a question: Do you have a USB 3.0 hub? What happens if you connect the two drives to a USB 3.0 hub and this hub to the NUC? Does it affect boot then?

Plugging both drives into a hub does not affect boot. I'll try them one at a time and see if that changes anything. Where's the field circus when you need it?

Yea, past experience indicated that this would likely be the case.

So next tell me everything you can about these USB drives. The BIOS folks will need this to investigate what is going on.

It appears to boot normally if one drive is plugged into a USB port on the back of the NUC and the other is plugged into a hub attached to the USB C port on the front. It errors if both drives are plugged into USB ports on the NUC or into the hub.

A report from the driver assistant is attached.

  1. I've performed similar test on NUC8i7HVK with two external HDD: WD Elements 25A1 3TB HDD and WD My Password 0740 1TB HDD.
  2. I've not seen any problems during boot and in Windows, while the both HDDs where connected to the USB ports on the NUC.
  3. I've got POST failure and only one of two drives was recognized in Windows, when both drives where connected to USB Hub. This was probably because of the HUB current limit.
  4. In my opinion there is nothing wrong in the NUC.
  5. Please test again with both drives connected to NUC.

Leon

With both WD My Book drives connected either to rear USB ports on the NUC817HNK or to USB ports on a powered hub, I get POST errors. With one in the NUC and one in the hub, it's fine. FWIW, I tried the same tests with a pair of WD My Passport drives, and there are no problems -- although one is a My Passport 0820 and the other is a My Passport 0830. Nor did I find any problems with one My Book and one My Passport. Even one My Book plugged in directly and the other My Book and the two My Passports plugged in the hub is still copacetic.

The problem I've seen I've only seen with a pair of WD My Book 25EE's. I don't have immediate access to another pair of identical model external drives.
