NUC8i5BEK slot SO-DIMM #2 problem

After 3 years of use I had to remove the second ram module. The 2 modules work great individually but only in slot # 1. Are there any precedents? Tips, suggestions?

The 2 modules are: Crucial RAM CT2K8G4SFS824A Kit da 16GB (2x8GB)

General rule to apply here: If swapping the SODIMMs between the two slots moves the problem to the other slot, then the SODIMM is likely at fault. If not, then the slot is likely at fault.

If the slot appears to be at fault, have you tried (carefully!) cleaning the connector? Step 1: Blow out connector with compressed air. Step 2: Clean contacts with contact cleaner. Step 3 (drastic): use very small file to (carefully!) buff contacts. Test between Steps.

Hope this helps,

Thank you very much for your reply. Both SO-DIMMs are fully functional ONLY in slot n. 1. I will try to perform the first 2 steps you are suggesting. If necessary, I will also address the third suggestion, but I should have a good understanding of how to proceed.

P.S. Somewhere I read that a contact in the CPU may also be involved. I confess that in many years at most I have had problems with the ram and not with the slots. I am confused.

Step 3 would be to address a more-drastic situation where the contacts in the connector have been corroded. This is *highly* unlikely in your case, but not 100% outside the realm of possibility over a long timeframe. In this case, you are using a very small file (from, for example, a set like this) to very lightly buff the surfaces of the contacts in order to remove any corrosion and create better contact. Again this is *highly* unlikely and I would discard this step if you are at all uncomfortable with it.

I forgot to mention - in Step 2, you can also use a white (not pink) pencil eraser (very lightly) to clean the contacts on the SODIMMs themselves.

Thank you very much for the answers. I performed steps 1 and 2 (WD40). But nothing changes. The NUC blinks 3 times (ram error). I also looked at every single contact with a microscope. They still look perfect to me, not deformed and shiny. My guess slips towards the contact on the CPU. Obviously inaccessible. So I hope I'm wrong. Regarding step 3 before using a file I would first opt to use another more aggressive cleaner. I would also like to try a white eraser but on the slot looking for one with a pointed shape (if any)

Question. Should I also check the slot on the back of the mainboard? I am referring to the contacts on the back

There is no contacts on the processor that you need to be worrying about - unless you have been flexing the board (removing it from the chassis would be necessary for that - in which case all bets are off). I would not attempt to use an eraser on the socket contacts; that would likely be damaging. I agree that contact cleaner carefully applied with a q-tip should be as far as you go. If this doesn't do it, you likely have a bus controller in the processor that has failed - and that means game over unless you want to run with a single slot.

Sorry,

I will try again with WD40 touching also the contacts under the board. I just hope this anomaly does not expand to the working slot as well. It would definitely be a rarity within a rarity. I will purchase a 16GB module.

I thank you very much.

I performed all the recommendations (except the file). But the problem persists. I reserved the right to try again with a more aggressive cleaner. But the real problem was understanding. I can also use the SLOT which works but I have no idea of reliability at this point. Thanks for your interest.

Bye

Thanks to all. Unfortunately there was nothing they could do. Warranty expired for 3 months (!!!!). I asked if I could have an identical model for a fee. But I was directed to an international list of sellers. I had to fall back on other brands to have a price in line with a problem resolution. The current models are triple the price of the NUC8 I bought 3 years ago. A greeting.
