NUC8i7HVB: Since latest Radeon Driver Update NUC8i7HVB works slowly!

Hi,

after recently updating the Radeon RX VEGA M GH driver of my NUC8i7HVB to version 30.0.13037.4001 Date12.03.2021 and the Intel Management Interface to version 2102.100.0.1044
Date 01.03.2021 by help of the INTEL Driver Support Assistant, it is as if my computer has been put in shackles. SSD content is displayed very slowly with Windows Explorer. Clicked windows or options react very delayed. Photoshop is also lame all of a sudden.

Does anyone know if there are any known problems with the above Radeon driver?

Thanks and kind regards

nuctestit, Thank you for posting in the Intel® Communities Support.

In order for us to provide the most accurate assistance on this scenario, we just wanted to confirm a few details about your system:

Is this a new Intel® NUC?

When did you purchase it? (For Warranty Purposes)

Was it working fine before installing the Radeon RX VEGA M GH driver?

Did you make any recent hardware/software changes, besides installing the driver, that might cause this issue?

Which Windows* version are you using?

Does the problem happen at home or in the work environment?

Please attach the SSU report so we can verify further details about the components in your platform, check all the options in the report including the one that says "3rd party software logs":

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility-for-Windows-?product=91...

You mentioned, "after recently updating the Radeon RX VEGA M GH driver of my NUC8i7HVB to version 30.0.13037.4001 Date12.03.2021 and the Intel Management Interface to version 2102.100.0.1044".

The latest Radeon™ RX Vega M Graphics Driver tested and validated by Intel® for your Intel® NUC Kit NUC8i7HVK is actually version 21.30.37.04 / Date 1/27/2022:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/19269/radeon-rx-vega-m-graphics-driver-for-windows-...

And the latest Intel® Management Engine driver for your Intel® NUC is version is 11.8.86.3877 / Date 2/22/2022:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/723020/intel-management-engine-consumer-driver-for-...

Once you get the chance, test those drivers and let us know the results to confirm if the problem persists that way. If the issue remains, please provide the information requested above.

Any questions, please let me know.

Thanks Albert, but I wrote that I had used the INTEL Driver Support Assistant. So I can expect that the drivers are the latest one.

Additionally I emphasized the driver´s version numbers so that you could see if they are the current ones.

Kind regards

nuctestit, You are very welcome, thank you very much for your response.

"the driver´s version numbers so that you could see if they are the current ones", yes, as you can see the driver's versions validated by Intel® specifically for your Intel® NUC available on our website are different from the ones that you described, they are actually more recent, both of them released on 2022, and they are the ones that we recommend to install.

Regarding the Intel® DSA application, the tool might not be that accurate in finding and installing the proper drivers for your device. For that reason, we suggest to install the drivers manually directly from our website so you can make sure that you are using the drivers tested and validated by Intel® and the most recent ones.

Please make sure that you are using the latest version of the Intel® DSA tool, which is 22.3.20.6. Just in case, for the links below, one of them is to uninstall the tool, and the other provides the latest version:

Uninstall:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/19333/intel-driver-support-assistant-uninstaller.ht...

Intel® DSA Tool:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/18002/intel-driver-support-assistant.html?wapkw=int...

If you already using the latest version of Intel® DSA and still do not see the proper drivers yet, please let us know so we can further assist you with the tool.

Hi,

I have implemented your recommendations and uninstalled the DSA tool and installed the current version.

I then downloaded the drivers you mentioned from the INTEL website and installed them, although I do not agree with your statement "Regarding the Intel® DSA application, the tool might not be that accurate in finding and installing the proper drivers for your device. ", because that is the task of the DSA tool!

Anyway, after the above uninstallations and reinstallations, the situation is following:

The Windows Device Manager displays the driver version 30.0.13037.4001 from 3. Dec 2021 for the Radeon RX Vega M GH (see screenshot). The DSA tool also outputs the same version number (see screenshot).

The Radeon software, on the other hand, shows the driver version as 21.30.37.04, which you mentioned above and which, according to your information, is the last tested and validated version by INTEL for my Radeon RX Vega M GH in the NUC kit NUC8i7HVK.

How do these conflicting version numbers come about?

I would also like to rule out the INTEL Management Driver and the INTEL Management Interface as the cause of the problem. Can I safely uninstall them? Or are they needed for other purposes than remote management?

Another thing I noticed: No SM-Bus driver appears in the Device Manager under System Devices. Is that normal?

Kind regards

Hello,

In my attempts to restore the previous performance of my iNUC, I also uninstalled the INTEL graphics card driver.

Here one can read:

Both the Intel HD Graphics driver and the Radeon™ RX Vega M Graphics driver should be installed. You may experience the following if both are not installed:

  • Unstable graphics
  • Can't set up multiple displays
  • Applications crash after opening

But where do I found that Intel Graphics Card driver which should be installed simultaneously to the one for the Radeon RX Vega M?

Trying to install the one under
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/19350/intel-graphics-dch-driver-for-intel-nuc.html

results in an error message that a driver for my system could not be found (exit code and the log file below!

Thanks and kind regards

Hi,

I cannot install the INTEL HD Graphics 630 Card driver for my iNUC:
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/19350/intel-graphics-dch-driver-for-intel-nuc.html

like mentioned above with error.log.

Which driver will I have to install?

The INTEL DSA application even does not show/offer any Intel Graphics Card driver.
Currently only the Radeon driver is installed.

Best regards

Hi nuctestit, Thank you very much for letting us know those details.

In reference to your questions: "How do these conflicting version numbers come about?", The reason is that the driver versions being offered by the Intel® DSA might not be the same as the ones we have on our website, tested and validated for the Intel® NUC.

"Can I safely uninstall them?", It is not recommended to uninstall them. The Intel® Chipset driver and the Intel® Management Engine are two of the main drivers needed for other purposes than remote management. They allow the communication between all the components in the Intel® NUC and for that reason are the two drivers that you need to install first, before any other drivers, the chipset first and then the management engine driver:

"But where do I found that Intel Graphics Card driver which should be installed simultaneously to the one for the Radeon RX Vega M?

Trying to install the one under

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/19350/intel-graphics-dch-driver-for-intel-nuc.html"

Yes, that is the correct link. So, please try the following:

-Uninstall Intel® DSA for now.

-Uninstall the Radeon driver From "Device Manager" as well.

-Then, install the Intel® DCH graphics driver version first 30.0.101.1660.

-Install the Radeon graphics driver 21.30.37.04.

-Test the Intel® NUC to confirm if it is still working slowly.

-If it's not, then install the Intel® DSA tool again and check which drivers are now being offered for installation.

Once you get the chance, please let us know the results and confirm if, after trying those troubleshooting steps, the Intel® NUC is still working slowly or not so we can further assist you.

Hi,

I could install the  Intel chipset driver and Intel® Management Engine like you described.

Afterwards I followed the recommended steps:

@Alberto_R_Intel wrote:

But again I cannot install the INTEL graphics driver you mention and get the same error like mentioned in my former post.

"No driver was found that can be installed on the current device. Exit Code 8."

I have the impression that this is because no INTEL graphics card appears in the device manager under display adapters. I can't find any reference to the integrated graphics card in the BIOS either, for example to turn it on or off.

Here is the part of the installation log:

Since it is written above that both drivers, the Intel graphics card driver and the Radeon driver must be installed, I wonder what I can do now?

Kind regards

Hello nuctestit, Since we have not heard back from you, we are closing the case, but if you have any additional questions, please post them on a new thread so we can further assist you with this matter.

Just in case, in the following link you will find the instructions on how to do a clean installation of the Intel® graphics drivers:

Hi,

sorry that I get in touch again only now!

Frankly, I don't understand your following comment:

"In reference to your questions: "How do these conflicting version numbers come about?", The reason is that the driver versions being offered by the Intel® DSA might not be the same as the ones we have on our website, tested and validated for the Intel® NUC."

One could think that you find this normal!

But in my eyes it is not. If I offer the buyer of an INUC a DSA tool with which he can keep the product-specific drivers up to date, this tool must also output the correct drivers for exactly this product. That is one which has been tested and validated.

These contradictory results I mentioned must not occur in the first place. What should I do with a DSA tool that shows me for my NUC8i7HVB that a Radeon™ RX Vega M driver version 30.0.21017.1000 is available and here again it is explained that version 21.30.37.04 is the latest, validated version.

Quite apart from that, I also wonder whether it goes down well with the customer that a driver 21.30.X is recommended to him when one has meanwhile arrived at version 30.0.X?

Kind regards
nuctestit

Hi,

I could solve the problem by changing the value in BIOS for the internal GPU from "auto" to "enable".

Having done this the unknown device appeared in the device manager and I could install the Intel HD630 driver and then the Radeon driver.

Thanks Albert for your assistance.

Kind regards
nuctestit
