NUC8i7HVK BIOS - LED lights not working after hnkbli70.86a.0064 BIOS update

Sorry if my post is related to this post but it seems that the thread was locked and I couldnt reply to it.

My NUC was working fine and as part of a recent re-installation of Win10 i decided to update the BIOS to a newer version using the windows installer file. In doing so, the lights went out. The skull, the status LEDs and the power button now longer light up anymore.

Because the BIOS readme said it couldnt be downgraded, i tried the recommended BIOS recovery and used a USB to reflash the BIOS with the same version HN0064.bio .

went through the reflash, powered down, unplugged the power cord, plugged it back in , went into the BIOS and reset everything, saved and rebooted. Still no lights.

Since there's a few other with this same issue, is this a bad BIOS update?

Thank you for the report. This is a known issue and is under investigation. It would help us if you could respond and provide us with a picture of the sticker on the bottom of your NUC.

Hi @purpledragon

Yes, you are not alone with this problem. Please see this thread. You may add there the S/A of your NUC. Intel is still investigating this problem and looks that only some units are affected. Probably units with the S/A J71485-503 (although there is a report for unit with S/A J71485-502).

Leon,

I have unit with S/A J71485-502 and its LEDs were not affected by the BIOS upgrade. I believe that it is just the units with S/A J71485-503 that have the issue.

Scott, I know that most reports are about -503, however @Jochen81  reported this problem in the other thread for S/A J71485-502

yep, my model is SA # / AA #:J71485-503

the only time I can get the skull to do anything is pressing the power button while booted in my OS causing it to go to standby mode which makes the skull pulse blue

Hi purpledragon,

We are actively working on this issue however it has been difficult to replicate due to the lack of samples exhibiting this behavior.

If you are willing to replace your unit under warranty,  please verify that your warranty period is still active, you can do that here Determine if Your Product Is Still Under Warranty), if still under warranty, contact Intel Customer Support to initiate the RMA process, here is how to contact us directly: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/contact-support.html#@7 (we cannot process warranty requests over the community due to privacy regulations).

Please make reference to case number 04915127.

Hello purpledragon,

Regarding the HDD; actually, you should keep the drive with you as it is not included originally with this PC: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000027285/intel-nuc/intel-nuc-kits.html

About the product being sent to you, please be aware that Intel may elect to repair or replace your product with a new or reconditioned one, as Intel deems appropriate, you can check that here: https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/mini-pcs/3yr_Lmtd_Wrnty_NUC_International.pdf

I will recommend you to contact your local support and check the options for you, refer to this post if needed https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/contact-support.html#@7

Before doing an RMA of you're NUC try disabling the HDMI CEC function in the BIOS. After further testing of my unit I can confirm this fully solved all issues with the following:

1. LEDs staying on after shutdown.
2. LEDs staying off when powering up.
3. Power button not switching unit on after a few days being off (power brick connected and on still).

thanks for the suggestion @Gaz2613 ,

I have done the change; I am going to see if the issue was solved or not.

I disabled the HDMI CEC, but in my case it does not make any difference.

so, I still have the issue with the LEDS.

Thats kind of worrying, although I have not had any issues since I fear the problem may return if it has not worked for you. Disabling the HDMI CEC definitely fixed the problem of the NUC not turning on at the power button though.

Did you remove the power cord after altering the BIOS setting?

Are you connecting you're NUC to a TV or monitor? I am connecting mine to a TV and I also disabled the CEC auto switching on the TV.

My unit was on for over 12 hours yesterday an the LEDs turned off correctly as soon as I shut the system down.

Hopefully intel will figure it out.

yes, I did disabled HDMI CEC and did a power cord remove from the wall and plug again.

But the issue reappeared after 1H of used, when I did a SHUTDOWN.

For now I have DISABLED ALL LEDS.

I let it like it is with all LEDS disabled till Intel fixe it with a BIOS UPDATE.

BIOS 0066 https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/30320/BIOS-Update-HNKBLi70- should resolve this issue.

Thanks everyone for your understanding and patience.

If after running the BIOS update to version 0066 your system is still exhibiting the same issue, please reach out directly to Intel Customer Support, here is our contact us information: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/contact-support.html#@7
