NUC8ixBEH Start up issue.

When start button is pressed the blue light comes on for a second and then goes out.

Tried another power cord, RAM and SDD to no avail. Any ideas? Intel technical support have been unable to offer any suggestions. NUC is 6 months out of warranty.

Try another power supply. They are fairly cheap through Amazon.

You didn't say that; you simply said you 'tried another power cord'.

Have you tried getting to the power button menu? That is, from powered off state, press and hold the power button for 3 seconds. After releasing, wait; it can take 10-15 seconds to come back in some cases - but let it sit for a minute or so.

Thanks for that suggestion and I have now tried this several times without success. No beeps and blue light goes out after one second. Nothing appears on monitor.

I can't remember whether the BE supported this, but keep holding the power button and see if it changes color.

Nothing after the blue light goes out (after about 1 second). Button held for 1 minute. There is still power to the NUC as I can see a light inside.

Hello @mausoleus

The CMOS battery in your NUC can be depleted ans should be replaced. However in order to replace this battery, you need to remove the board and probably the cooling blower as well.  Read also CMOS Battery on the Intel® NUC.

As far I know, your NUC can't boot with CMOS battery depleted/disconnected.

Hello Leon:

Reading CMOS Battery on the Intel® NUC would seem to indicate that if the battery fails the computer should nevertheless start and the monitor will show the message 'CMOS Battery Low'. My NUC will not start.

Am I reading this correctly?

Hello Peter,

In theory you are right.  Discharged CMOS battery should show warning and should not affect the NUC boot process. However, in this forum I saw cases, that the battery was partially depleted and the warning wasn't displayed and the boot process was distracted.  Since your NUC is out of warranty, if I will you, I would try this.

What happens when you powering your NUC without memory? Do you see series of three blinks of the Power Button LED? If yes, you may try to power ON the board with CMOS battery disconnected (RAM and SSD installed).

Hello Leon:

I have ordered a battery (with molex) and will see if that makes a difference.

When powered on without memory the power button blue light comes on for about one second and then goes out.

Hello Peter,

If you didn't saw series of three blinks when powering ON the NUC without RAM, could be a sign of failure in the power supply circuitry on the board and replacing the CMOS battery will not help.

Try to disconnect the CMOS battery and reconnect it after 15 minutes. If you have a DVM, you may check also the voltage on the battery terminals.

You need to replace the thermal paste after around 3 years, when they are out of warranty. Be extra careful because the antenna connector will just broke when you try to remove the cable. You need some thermal tape too.

I opened mine and I found missing microphone cable assembly, soldering flux left, and the antenna connector broke of course.

You can check my post with pictures here https://community.intel.com/t5/Intel-NUCs/NUC8i5BEH-left-microphone-missing-cable-assembly-and-other/m-p/1399776#M92554

It's just disposable computing and you won't get any replacemente when you are out of warranty.

NUC maybe was a good idea, but completely bad manufacturing and testing made it only an expensive toy.

I suggest you to move to a mini-itx for you next computer.
