NUC9i9QNX slows to stop after several hours

My relatively new NUC9i9 is acting like it's slowly overheating, but the fans appear to be working.

I've swapped out every chip, with no improvement.

I'm running Linux Ubuntu 20.04. I have several other of the same machine working fine.

When I run a processing-heavy process, it starts slow, appears to get up to speed, then several hours later the CPU's are all but kaput, taking turns running at 100% for minutes at a time, with little to no processing actually done.

Can help?

Hello @BigSilverOrb

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities.

We understand that (maybe) due to overheating, the Intel® NUC is slowing and impacting performance, is this correct?

For overheating or thermal issues, we recommend reviewing and trying the basic recommendations in this article: Troubleshooting Overheating or Thermal Issues on Intel® NUC.

If the behavior persists (or if you eliminate overheating as the possible root cause of the issue), could you please provide the following information so we can check this further?

1- We understand that this is a relatively new device. Is the behavior happening since the first day that you have the unit? Have you been running Linux UBUNTU* 20.04 since the first day? Have you run/tested any other operating system on this device? Please provide details.

2- Please elaborate more regarding this issue and provide more details and examples of the "processing-heavy process". Also, what would be the expected processing result, and what is the actual result when the device experiences this behavior?

Also, please explain how you are monitoring the CPU speed, CPU workload, and performance. We would appreciate very detailed step-by-step instructions so we may understand this better.

3- The following logs (you may attach the reports as .txt files):

# /var/log/dmesg:

# /var/log/kern.log:

4- A report for Intel® System Support Utility for the Linux* Operating System.
