Need original BIOS file for NUC 6i7KYK

Hello,

I have a NUC 6i7KYK. I know this is no longer supported. I am wondering if I can get the original BIOS file that was on my unit?

KYSKLI0.86A.0037.2016.0603.1032

My processor is i7-6770HQ if that’s needed.

In the downloads area, only the files for a 2021 version seem available.

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/18677/bios-update-kyskli70.html?wapkw=nuc6i7kyk%20bios

I am not sure the best path to request help on getting this older file.

Thank you,

Kimberley Smith

Kimberly,

If you are saying that you have BIOS 74 installed (KYSKLi70.86A.0074.2021.0102), then you cannot downgrade to any older BIOS release. Once you have installed a BIOS update that introduces either a change in security/vulnerability support/mitigation or an update to the Intel Management Engine firmware, by hard and fast rule any attempt to downgrade to any previous BIOS release will be blocked. BIOS 74 actually introduced both, so no downgrading is supported. Sorry, but Intel simply does not compromise on security issues.

All that said, I do not believe that your issue is with the BIOS release at all. First of all, make sure that you have both UEFI and Legacy Boot enabled in the BIOS. Then, make sure that you properly install Windows in UEFI mode. How do you do this? Here are the steps:

  1. Create new Windows boot media using the Microsoft Media Creation tool. You can download this tool from here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10. You need a USB flash drive that is at least 8GB in size.
  2. Boot via UEFI to the USB flash drive. At BIOS POST, press F10 to display the Boot Device selection menu and choose the entry for the USB flash drive that indicates UEFI boot method.
  3. Very important: When the Windows installer get to the scene where you select the drive and partition to install to, you must delete *all* partitions that currently exist on your desired boot drive. Then, select to install to the single entry for unused/unpartitioned space on that drive. This step ensures that the drive's partition table is replaced with a proper UEFI GPT partition table; if you have ever done a Legacy install on this drive, you won't get a proper UEFI installation without performing this step.

Hope this helps,

What is your current bios version?   You likely will not be able to go back, even if the old version were available.

It's a terribly long story of I knew just enough to be dangerous to my old system. I have Win 10 updated to last fall's update. To correct a re-occurring POST error and re-starting issue whenever changing sign ins, I "researched" and decided to update my BIOS to what is recommended on page cited above. I have backups of most all data and didn't research any further. I updated and now it won't recognize my SATA Samsung drive (original) as the boot drive. I have changed back and forth from Legacy to UEFI boot options.

I do not see Windows Boot Manager under Legacy Boot Options. The SETUP menu still shows the drive and contents, but Windows won't launch. Says "says reboot and select proper boot device."

Have even gone through Recovery Boot process instructions from Intel.

Of course I didn't have a Windows Recovery USB set up. I may try to create a Windows Boot disk on my Chromebook which has a USB port.

In any case, I have ordered a new 11i7 NUC with Win 10, I just would like to continue to use the old one though I realize I might have to just re-format and start fresh with it. Last resort with more research.

Is downgrading really complicated? Might not try it since I mucked up the upgrade.
