No power on after BIOS upgrade to SY0067

I have two NUC6i3SYH wich serial numbers SA...-504 which were operating fine since Dec 2016.

Yesterday I upgraded BIOS to SY0067 which did a lot of work but finished successfully.

Everything worked fine and I was able to install Ubuntu Desktop 18.04 and rebooted several times.

After I was done I disconnected it and did the same with the second NUC.

When I switched back to the first one I noticed that it no longer powers on. Pressing the power button has no effect at all.

Only the LAN led blinks and on the back side of the board there is a green LED.

I tried the second unit with the same result. So I guess the BIOS update damaged something that is needed when powering up from a no-power state.

Symptoms:

The blue power LED does not light up at all. No beeps, nothing on the screen.

What I tried:

- disconnected SSD, removed RAM, removed security jumper, removed battery for a few hours

- long-pressed power button 3 sec, 10 sec

- removed power and pressed power button a few times

- Tried all combinations of RAM, SSD, power supply since I have two exact same units.

I've NUC6i5SYH, updated to SY0067. No problems at all. You wrote that you have removed jumper, but I don't know what you did after jumper removing. Try to power ON you NUC with security jumper removed and all four USB slots empty. After about 30 seconds, you shall see Configuration Menu (similar to the attached image)

Thank you for your suggestion.

I tried to power on without security jumper, with empty usb slots, with empty hdmi slot, with RAM, without RAM, with SSD, without SSD with short press, with 3 sec press and all combinations thereof. Fan does not spin, blue power led does not light up, screen shows no signal.

You may need a true CMOS reset. That is, unplug the battery from the top of the board for 15 minutes.

Since you have mentioned that you have removed the battery for few hours, I have no more idea. It is hard to understand how both NUCs have failed with similar failure after bios update, without any possibility to recover the bios. Even more, you have written "Everything worked fine and I was able to install Ubuntu Desktop 18.04 and rebooted several times." It looks that when system was OFF in S5 state, every thing worked. Only when you disconnect the power adapter, the system couldn't boot any more.

Do you have any HDD installed in your NUC (since you have the SYH configuration)? If yes, you have not mentioned that you have try to operate your NUC without HDD.

I tried with RAM only and even without RAM.

I have just sent them back as we are out of ideas.

You probably need a H/W-level CMOS reset. With power disconnected, unplug the battery from the top surface of the NUC's board for 15 minutes.

CMOS reset did not help either.

units were replaced and work fine now with bios 0060.

Why they failed?

How they failed?

Are you going to update the Bios to ver. 0067?

I don't know what went wrong and I did not get feedback/diagnosis only the replacement units.

I guess it has something to do with updating a late 2016 BIOS directly to the most recent one.

But no, I won't risk updating these to 0067.
