When I connect the unit to the mains all three leds in the front are instantly flash white..is it normal behaviour?

It's a possibility. I suggest that you,

1. Try resetting the BIOS configuration. Use F2 as BIOS POST to get into BIOS Setup (Visual BIOS). Use F9 (followed by Y) to reset BIOS configuration then use F10 (followed by Y) to save this change and exit BIOS Setup.
2. Try using the LED manager (downloaded from here: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27641) to change the color configuration to something more pleasant.

In my opinion the momentary blink in white color of the front LED after connecting to the power adapter is normal and you should not worry. In my NUC8i7HVK two LED are blinking in white color afer connecting the power adapter: the left LED (drive activity, which during normal operation, blinks in Red) and the middle LED (NET activity, is green during normal operation).
