Select your noise

Hi

I'm new to NUC, got it today and noticed 3 kinds of noises.

  1. Fans. I read about cooling profiles but didn't understand how/where to define those and how to know which profile is better.
  2. Hissss. Not sure I know how to describe it but it's similar to when I charge my mobile and it reaches 100%. With my mobile I simply disconnect it from the socket but with my NUC, I'm not sure it will be a good idea. This sound is constant.
  3. Clicks. Yeah, every few seconds, a short-low-volume click sound is heard from the box.

Any idea what can be done about those?

Thanks

There are a lot of NUCs. Tell us your model number.

Sorry, but that is the processor model number, not the NUC model number.

Download, run, and ATTACH (using the paperclip under the toolbar) the results of this utility:

Thanks for the tip. One correction if I may, 3rd noise is not a click, it's a tick.

The combination of noise 2 and 3 is similar to how my previous hard drive (sata) sounded when it was working.

You have a NUC8i7HVK, which is a very nice machine. I have one, and access to two others, none of which make any noise.

Perhaps one of the Intel support engineers can help.

Thanks.

In the meantime, one more thing: Apparently the ticks are coming from the router which was "standing" near the NUC. Sound 2 is the most annoying one as it is constant.

One more update after getting a good night sleep: Sound 2 is not a hisss sound but a very high frequency short beeps one after the other. Obviously when the NUC is asleep, no sound is heard.

Hello Aamos1,

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities.

We will be glad to continue assisting you. Please share the details below at your earliest convenience.

  • Please confirm if the power supply used is the original power adapter received when you purchased the unit.
  • Is it possible to test a different power supply?
  • Are you using a power strip or is it directly connected to a power outlet?
  • When does the NUC become noisy? Is this experienced when a heavy load, always, using any specific tool or program?
  • Have you confirmed that the unit is clean or if there are any obstructions in the air vents?
  • Load BIOS default settings by following these steps:
  1. Press F2 during boot to enter BIOS Setup.
  2. Press F9 to load defaults.
  3. Press F10 to save and exit BIOS Setup.

Feel free to reply if any additional assistance is required.

Hi

  1. The power supply is the original one.
  2. I don't have another power supply.
  3. The NUC is connected to the power supply that is connected to a UPS that is connected to the wall outlet.
  4. The ongoing beeps are happening constantly, from time to time it stop for a second or two and then continue. The fans obviously making more noise when the computer is working on something and then I don't hear the beeps.
  5. If I understand correctly, the air vents go sideways and to the rear? There is nothing around the NUC, the closest thing is 10cm to its right and 20 cm to its rear (wall).
  6. I will try the BIOS defaults if nothing else will help. Is that also where the cooling profiles are?

A test I've made shows that even when only the power cord is connected, the beeps are there. Actually it's not really lots of short beeps but more like an ongoing beep. I wish I knew how to describe it... maybe static noise?

BTW: is there something that can be done with the fans noise?

Thanks

OK, I found the best description yet to the sound: high pitched noise and coil whine. I hope that makes sense to anyone.

I also found 2 posts about a similar issue from a long time ago so I'm not sure how to relate what is written there to my box

https://forums.intel.com/s/question/0D70P0000068xn3SAA/d54250wyk-switching-noise?language=en_US#

and

https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/high-pitched-noise-coming-from-cpu-area.399299/

Please advice

Thanks

Hello Aamos1,

Thank you for your reply.

To try a different fan control settings in BIOS follow the steps below:

  • Press F2 during boot to enter BIOS Setup.
  • Go to Advanced > Cooling.
  • In the CPU Fan Header pane, experiment with setting Fan Control Mode to Balanced and Cool.
  • Press F10 to save and exit BIOS Setup.

If the issue persists after modifying these settings and loading BIOS back to default, and taking into consideration that this high pitch sound does not seem to be normal, we would say there might be a problem with the NUC system.

Please confirm if the unit was acquired in the last 30 days. If so, we recommend you get in touch with the place of purchase so they can help you to replace the unit.

Hi Daisy,

As you can see from the links I posted here: https://forums.intel.com/s/question/0D50P00004g2nQQSAY

People replaced their box 3-4 times and the problem was still there. My unit is less than 1 week old, who promises me that the replaced unit won't have the same high pitch sound again?

The noise is not that high but when things are quiet here then it's noticeable.

I can try the fan plans you wrote but that sound doesn't seem to be coming from the fans, they have their own unique sound :)
