Skull Canyon Graphics Output Problem

Up until now, everything has been good with my new Skull Canyon. Yesterday, I ran into an issue. This is an HDMI connection from the NUC into a receiver and then into a display.

Yesterday, I installed Alien Isolation. When I ran it, audio started but no graphics appeared. The receiver then reported "no signal." The screen was dark. I was able to get back to Windows Home screen by hitting the Windows key. I did this several times.

When I eventually rebooted, the Windows Desktop would not appear. After the NUC logo, the screen went black. My receiver is reporting "No signal" to the display. Note that "no signal" means that no signal is being received. If an incompatible signal is being received, that would have been reported instead. I assume the the NUC's HDMI port is not outputting anything to the receiver.

I was able to boot normally on other displays but not on this primary display and receiver. If I bypass the receiver, and plug in HDMI directly to the display, it also works.

The receiver works fine with other sources. I tried different cables and different inputs. The problem remains.

On another display, I uninstalled the Intel graphics driver. It installs the MS stock driver. This combination works with my receiver but at low resolution. But, when I reinstall the Intel driver, I again lose the signal.

I have run out of ideas. I can't understand why it had been working but now it is not.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Looking into this, it seems like the "black screen" issue is a well known problem with Intel Graphics. It seems to have been ongoing for several years and has not been resolved.

Investigating further, if I disable the Iris graphics in Device Manager, I can receive a full 1080p signal. Then, enabling the Iris graphics results in a black screen.

I suspect that enabling the Iris graphics causes the NUC to output on the Display Port rather than HDMI, hence the "no input" signal over HDMI. I'm going to pick up a display port to HDMI adapter today and see if that works. I suspect it does.

I agree you should try, but understand that there are negatives to using DP-to-HDMI adapters that may affect you as well. Alas, this is not a H/W issue; it is definitely a graphics driver issue and yes, it has been around for a long time (multiple processor generations!). Sigh...

I got a display port to HDMI cable. It works.

Then, I switch back to HDMI. It now also works again.

But, if I then try to launch Alien Isolation over HDMI, I'm back to the black screen and can recover only if I use the display port cable. All is well over display port.

I think something about HDMI is borked. Again, it seems to be a display specific issue. It happens when I use my receiver. It goes away if I bypass the receiver and plug directly into the display. I also tried on another display and had no problem.

In the HDMI case, the issue most reported is not being able to wake the monitor back up after idling to sleep or, in receiver case, it being switched to another input for a while. I hope we will see a fix eventually...

I think so. I've swapped out the cable and had the same thing happen.

To verify you have High quality HDMI, look along the cabling itself for the printed text which says "High Speed HDMI Cable." If it is not there, you may not be using a cable that is required to work with your device.

The first, and easiest, thing to try is to let the units reset and try handshaking again by turning them off, unplugging them from the power, and powering them up again in order. Leave all the HDMI cables connected during his process. Plug the TV back into the power and turn it on.Plug the receiver back into the power and turn it on.Plug the source device back into the power and let it go through its startup routine. Other cables exhibit the same behavior.

It only becomes manifest when hooked up to the receiver and only after launching that game.

And this happened especially when you installed Alien Isolation?

Do you know if your HDMI cable is high-quality HDMI 1.4A cable?

Try uninstalling the graphics driver, restart your system and then reinstall it, you can download the latest beta driver here:

Follow the steps on http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/graphics-drivers/000005598.html Uninstalling the Intel® Graphics Driver and Intel® Display Audio HDMI Driver. Make sure you uninstall both drivers.
