Skull Canyon (NUC6i7KYK) can't do >2 channel audio via HDMI?????

Jump to solution

Specs: Win10x64 (build ~Jul.1/'17, fully patched), Drivers all patched up, HDMI->TV->SoundBar (via ARC)

So. ... Why does my sound-settings limit me to 2-channel only? Everything seems legit but it just won't offer higher than 1995 sound quality. It's really ticking me off. Same setup next to the NUC from Xbox One and my SoundBar shows DTS. From NUC, 2-channel. BAH!!!

I've tried:

- uninstalling display driver, reboot, reinstall

- patching HDMI Firmware to February's release

- different cables (all are HDMI2.0 compliant)

- different ports on TV (my TV has a bunch of 30hz ports, and one 60hz)

Has anyone else dealt with this and found a resolution?

What kind of TV do you have?

Not many TV's will take 5.1 on a HDMI input and output it on ARC.

I have a 4k LG TV with 5.2 built in and it on shows as 2 channel Dolby and DTS (no HD audio) on the NUC.

You are going NUC - TV - Soundbar

You need to go NUC - Soundbar - TV (to get proper audio.)

SP3NGL3R: Thank you very much for joining the Intel® NUC communities. We are sorry to hear that the NUC is not working as expected.

In order to try to fix this problem, we can try a BIOS update to the latest version 0049 using the F7 method:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/boards-and-kits/000005850.html https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/boards-and-kits/000005850.html

Also, please install the SSU tool (System Support Utility):

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility

Once you do that, the tool will allow you to save the information as a file, please attach it to this thread, in order for us to be able to see it.

Any further questions, please let me know.

Hi Alberto.

See attached for the SSU output.

NOTE: when I run Intel Driver Update Utility 2.9, it shows that somehow I have some drivers that are "higher" than what's reported as latest. I'm guessing these came from MSFT Updates, but not sure.

SP3NGL3R: Thank you very much for providing that information. And yes, when that happens normally the drivers that get installed belong to Microsoft. Just to let you know, sometimes the Intel® driver update utility is not that accurate in finding and installing the drivers, that is why we recommend to install them manually from our web site. We will do further research on this matter, as soon as I get any updates I will post all the details on this thread.

Any questions, please let me know.

SP3NGL3R: I just wanted to let you know that I just received some updates from the research we are doing on this matter and we think the issue that you are describing here is very similiar to: /thread/117579 https://communities.intel.com/thread/117579

The fix comes as part of the HDMI 2.0 firmware update that you mentioned that you have tried already: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26061/NUCs--HDMI-2-0-Firmware-Update-Tool-for-Intel-NUC-Ki... https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26061/NUCs--HDMI-2-0-Firmware-Update-Tool-for-Intel-NUC-Ki...

Please be aware of the following description:

"Updates the HDMI 2.0 Firmware for the Intel® NUC Kit NUC6i7KYK. This update fixes an issue where surround sound (5.1 or 7.1) does not work with some AV receivers. This Firmware update is only required if an HDMI 2.0 device is being used. An HDMI 2.0 device must be connected when you run this Firmware update, or the following error is displayed: "OUI mismatch!" and/or "Product ID error! Please check your firmware".

We would recommend that you try to connect the NUC to any sound device that can do better than just stereo, perhaps the TV only just to make sure that the issue is not with AVR.

Any questions, please let me know.

Regards,

Alberto R

Perhaps my reply was confusing, I apologize for that.

Can you send me the model of the AVR, TV and Soundbar and the way they are connected?

That would help me understand the environment better.

Thanks,

Ronny G

I considered this. But when my Xbox-TV-SoundBar is selected (via TV input 2) the soundbar states it's getting full DTS. So I know the TV 'can' pass it through. Or it's at least appearing to pass it. I don't know how to truly test the XBox One for 7.1.

I'll try it this weekend. But that will really piss me off if I have to route through a device that only has one HDMI input. (TV has 5, SoundBar has 1 ).

Thanks:

TV == VIZIO M65-C1

SoundBar == VIZIO S5451w-C2

Wire Order:

NUC -> TV -> SB

Xbox -> TV -> SB

I use my TV as the hdmi switch because the SB can only have one HDMI input . I've heard that I "have" to go through the SB before the TV, but that totally breaks my "easy switching" capability of the TV having 5 inputs and one ARC out.

I have pre-ordered one of these. Should be shipping in a couple of weeks. Would take care of your issues I think.

Going NUC -> SoundBar -> TV (ARC) worked. I don't like it. But now my NUC reports up to 7.1. I guess I'll have to re-install my HDMI switch before at the cabinet: NUC/Xbox/etc. -> HDMI switch -> SoundBar -> TV
