The fan keeps turning on even after sleep (NUC 11)

Hi,

I have a NUC11PAKi5 running Windows 10.

When I perform a sleep operation while Windows 10 is running, it goes into sleep mode normally, but the fan still keeps rotating.
(The LED on the power button blinks when it goes into sleep mode, so I could recognize that it is in sleep mode successfully).

Is this a specification? Or is it abnormal?

The following is the situation with Intel NUC.

  • A clean install of Windows 10.
  • Installed the latest drivers and completed Windows Update.
  • BIOS version is 0039 (latest).
    • Update using .cap files
    • And I haven't changed the settings.
  • No external storage connection.
  • RAM:CT16G4SFRA32A(DDR4-3200MHz) M.2:CT1000P1SSD8 (1TB)

I received my replacement and set it up again.
The currently published BIOS didn't improve my symptoms.
I installed BIOS-0040, and this time all the problems were solved.
It seems that the problem was in both the hardware and the BIOS. The problem has been solved and the case is now closed.

Thank you to all those who helped me to solve this problem.

Hi @t_japan 

1. Enter BIOS settings - click on F2 when you see Intel NUC logo during boot process.

2. Click on F9 and confirm setting BIOS to default settings.

3. Click on F10 (confirm) to save default settings and exit from BIOS.

Thank you for your reply.

I followed the steps as instructed and tried to put the NUC to sleep again.
But the fan is still spinning.

Hi @t_japan 

1. I don't know, what method you have used for BIOS update. If it was express method, I would try to update BIOS again, but this time using BIOS Recovery by Power Button Menu:

2. Prepare USB stick fully formatted to FAT32 (disable quick format option during format). Format your USB on Windows machine (rather than Linux or MAC).

3. Download  PATGL357.0039.RECOVERY.zip  and extract the PATGL357.cap file from this archive. Copy the PATGL357.cap to the root of the previously prepared USB stick. Insert this USB stick into rear USB port on your NUC. 

4. Press and hold Power Button for about 3 seconds. Count 1001, 1002, 1003. Release the Power Button. NUC should reboot into Power Button Menu (this will take about 60 seconds). You should release the Power Button before 4-sec shut down override or when the Power Button LED changes color from blue to amber.

5. Press F4 and the recovery shall start (it can take up to 30 seconds for messages to appear on the screen). When the recovery finishes, NUC will automatically restart.  Remove the USB stick.

6.  Reboot your NUC and enter BIOS again (F2). Reset BIOS to default settings (F9), (F10)

7. If you didn't this yet, please download and install manually the Chipset Device Software and Management Engine Driver. Reboot NUC.

Thanks for the instructions.

I updated by downloading the .cap file and pressing the F7 key, but again I updated as instructed.

After the update, I also downloaded and installed the Chipset Device Software and Management Engine Driver.
But the result was the same...

Hi @t_japan 

Disconnect the Power Adapter, open the NUC bottom cover and disconnect the CMOS Battery connector. Reconnect it after 15 minutes.

During boot process, you will see (for one time only), CMOS battery warning. Disregard it.

I unplugged the CMOS battery connector and left it for at least 15 minutes, then reconnected the connector.
Then I turned it on. I didn't see the "CMOS Battery Warning", but the boot time was longer than usual.

Even with this, the fan kept spinning in sleep mode.

Hi @t_japan 

1. In my opinion this is abnormal that the blower continues to work in sleep mode. Probably this is something wrong with the Modern Standby mode, however, you are the first that I saw reporting this.

2. How you set your NUC into sleep mode? form the Start Power Menu or clicking on Sleep key on keyboard? If you are using the Start Menu try keyboard.

3. Is Hibernate disabled in Windows settings?

4. How does works if it enter to sleep automatically after timeout? You may set this timeout in Windows settings: System>Power & sleep.

Yes. I set my NUC into sleep form the Start Power Menu or clicking on Sleep key on keyboard.
(With the mouse, the slightest movement could cause it to immediately wake up from sleep.)

I've tried your instructions.

  • Disable Hibernate

I ran "powercfg /hibernate off" with administrative privileges and rebooted. I then put the NUC to sleep, but the problem is not solved yet.

 

  • sleep automatically(After disable hibernate)

I set the sleep time to "1 minute" and left it until the NUC went to sleep.
It then went to sleep normally,  but the problem is not solved yet.

I also noticed that sometimes the screen stayed on during sleep Probability. (The screen is blacked out, but the signal is still going through).

I connect it to my display via HDMI.

Hi @t_japan 

I'm sorry that no of my advices helped to solve the problem. Can be that this is a hardware problem and your NUC should be replaced. Any way, lets wait for answer from Intel Support Engineer.  Since I understand that you have skill to work with PC and Windows, I'm assuming that your Windows is installed correctly. To give more information about your system, please download the System Support Utility.  Run the SSU full scan and save the results. The txt file with the SSU report, please attach to your post.

Looking back on the work we've done so far.

Summarize what I have done so far:

  1. Disable Hibernate
  2. re-updating BIOS (using PATGL357.0039.RECOVERY.zip)
  3. clear CMOS
  4. Reinstall Windows 10 and re-execute the previous operations.

Actually, my  NUC 11 has the following other problems.

1.Suddenly rebooting

While running Windows 10, it suddenly becomes inoperable and returns to the boot screen after a few seconds.
After rebooting, check the "System" log in the Event Viewer and I will see the error "WHEA-Logger Event ID 1".
The temporary solution I found is to remove the graphics driver(Use the standard Windows driver)

 

2.Custom fan control is impossible
In the BIOS settings, if I set the "Fan Control Mode" to "Custom" and change even one of the parameters, the fan behaves strangely. Specifically, when the CPU gets hot, the fan speed does not increase, or on the contrary, the fan stops (even if the "fan off capability" is turned off!).

 

I've set up several NUCs of various generations, but this is the first time I've had this much trouble......

As I mentioned at the bottom of this post, "Suddenly rebooting" was solved by writing the BIOS again via efi instead of recovery


However, the "fan keeps turning" and "custom fan control is impossible" are not solved.
I've tried everything from re-updating the BIOS to replacing the M.2 and RAM, but there's nothing more I can do.

 

(In my opinion, I think these two problems are caused by something wrong in one place in the hardware.)

Hello, @DeividA_Intel 

OK, I'll attach a picture to this thread.
The BIOS remains at its default setting.


I also found something odd.
The ME FW Version shown on the Main Screen of BIOS is old.
According to the release notes, the ME FW Version is 15.0.2.1499, but my BIOS was 15.0.2.1377.

After a lot of trial and error, the following procedure solved the problem with the old "ME FW Version".

  1. CMOS Reset 
  2. update BIOS via iflashvefi64.efi

However, it did not solve the sleep and fan problems.

I understand. The next business day of the store where I bought it is May 6th, so I will ask for a replacement on that day.

I am also very interested in these issues, so I will continue to use various experiments (to the extent that I don't lose my NUC's warranty).
