Thunderbolt devices take forever to be recognized

I apologize if this is in the wrong place...

I have a Dell XPS 15 9550. According to Dell's update program all the system software is current. Because it's a Dell I can not install anything that doesn't come from Dell. I've tried with video and Thunderbolt drivers and they always fail so I stopped checking anywhere but Dell many months ago. The computer is connected to a Dell WD19TB Thunderbolt 3 dock via the laptops Thunderbolt 3 port.

Connected to the dock is a

  • 32" 4k monitor via Display Port
  • My audio is run from this monitor to the Klipsch speakers
  • A 24" FHD monitor connected via HDMI,
  • A network cable via the RJ-45 port,
  • ALacie 2Big Dock Thunderbolt 3 drive connected via Thunderbolt,
  • A Lacie d2 Thunderbolt 3 drive daisy chained through the 2Big Dock.

For as long as I can remember ALL the Thunderbolt devices except the monitors take a substantial amount of time to be recognized: both drives, audio (internal laptop speakers work), and the network connection. By substantial I mean 3 to 5 minutes.

Always. This happened before I got the dock when everything above was plugged directly into the Thunderbolt port of the Dell so it's unlikely it's the dock.

Any thoughts on what is wrong and what I can do to alleviate this issue?

Thanks,

Mike
