Wake on Bluetooth after sleep

Dear all,

I actually using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard and I am trying now to setup my PC in order to wake it by moving the mouse or typing the keyboard after a sleep. I tried all possible settings in the device manager etc., but unsuccessful.

I read different old post about this issue by other devices, but nothing seems to be actually resolved.

In the BIOS, a setup "Wake on WLAN and BT" is available under the Power option, but it does not seem to work.

Does anybody encounter the same issue or has any advice to find the solution?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards,

padunand

Hello padunand,

Thank you for posting on the Intel ® communities.

I can see that you are experiencing problems when trying to wake up the system using a Bluetooth* mouse and keyboard.

Regarding this, I would like to begin by requesting an System Support Utility report. This report can be generated from our tool, you can refer to the link below so you can download it:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility-for-Windows- https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/Intel-System-Support-Utility-for-Windows-

Make sure to attach the created report to this thread.

Also, please provide me with the model of your NUC so we can do further research and testings.

Hello padunand,

Thank you for your response.

I was reviewing the System Support Utility report and I can see that there is no issues except for the BIOS version that you are running. There has been a new release, could you please try updating the BIOS version and trying to wake up the computer with the Bluetooth* mouse and keyboard again?

Here is the latest BIOS version:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28185/BIOS-Update-HNKBLi70-86A-?product=126141 BIOS 0050

Also, in the link below you can find steps explaining how to do a BIOS update:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005636/mini-pcs.html BIOS Update instructions

I would greatly appreciate if you could provide me with the brand and model of the wireless mouse and keyboard as well. Are you connecting it directly with the Bluetooth* of the system or did they come with a USB adapter?

Let me know the outcome and the information please.

Regards,

Dear David,

Thank you for your support.

I updated my NUC with the last BIOS 050 but unfortunately still no way to wake the system with the mouse or the keyboard on Bluetooth.

I am using the new Microsoft modern keyboard an mouse directly connected with the internal Bluetooth of the NUC.

I though to try to use an external Bluetooth dongle, but I don't have such device and I will not take the risk to buy one for nothing.

According to my opinion it is something going wrong with the Bluetooth driver itself. The option to wake the system of the Bluetooth device is still gray in the device manager and cannot be activated; I don't know why. If I connect the modern keyboard to UBS, the keyboard can wake the system.

Best regards,

padunand

Hello padunand ,

Please read the Technical Product Specification for your NUC: https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/mini-pcs/nuc-kits/NUC8i7HNK_TechProdSpec.pdf https://www.intel.com/content/dam/support/us/en/documents/mini-pcs/nuc-kits/NUC8i7HNK_TechProdSpec.pdf .

On page 31, last line in Table 1.14.1.2 you will find that wake from Bluetooth is not supported.

Hello Leon,

Thank you for your advice. I understood, but according the BIOS setting under power option, you can adjust the wake from Bluetooth (see picture "power.jpg").

It is a contradiction.

padunand

Hello padunand ,

I understood that you didn't like my replay to your question. I thing that there is a mistake in bios label. The specification clearly states that this function is not supported. Many manufactures will not allow a Bluetooth device to wake the computer from sleep mode because of the power consumption requirements to keep the Bluetooth radio activated (Bluetooth paging can consume up to 15% of the computer's power).

You may check also the Bluetooth setting in Device Manager. I'm attaching an image from my computer, showing the Power Management tab in Properties of Intel Bluetooth Adapter. You will notice that the option "Allow this device to wake this computer" is grayed out and can't be enabled. Check in your computer this setting. If this option can be enabled, it will solve your problem. I have a doubt that you will be able to do this.

Leon

Dear Leon,

Thank you for your answer. I understand you point of view and your argument.

As already mentioned, by me the Power Management tab in Properties of Intel Bluetooth Adapter "Allow this device to wake this computer" is grayed out too.

As I understand, there is no chance to activate is and this topic can be closed.

Do you think, can it be a solution by using an external Bluetooth dongle or the behaviour will be exactly the same?

Pierre-Alain

Dear Pierre-Alain,

I didn't tested it, but I thing external Bluetooth dongle inserted into USB will work, however as I said, I'm not sure. In my NUC I'm working with Logitech combo MK520 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07G43V66P?aaxitk=9DkgR-w48SvGOIYmlcptGg&pd_rd_i=B07G43V66P&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=54dc821a-0937-4e6f-9da9-f8dd5443145d&pf_rd_s=desktop-sx-top-slot&pf_rd_t=301&pf_rd_i=logitech+mk520+wireless+keyboard+and+mouse+combo Amazon.com: Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Combo,Seenda 2.4G Ultra Slim Rechargeable Wireless Keyboard and Mouse for Comput… In this set is included wireless Unified Adapter. Using this set I can wake my NUC from S3 state. The dongle is siting in USB socket like any Bluetooth dongle.

Leon,

thanks for your clear explanations.

I too have a nuc with microsoft designer keyboard and mouse (no usb dongle) and can't wake from sleep. I have had to turn off sleep mode (which for environmental reasons I'd rather not have to).

Most people buy a nuc because they want a minimalist setup and using bluetooth devices is consistent with that. I understand the reason why bluetooth is turned off under sleep mode (i.e. power reasons).

It seems there is a simple solution. Just allow a simple short press on the power button to wake pc.

What do you think?

Regards, Rod

p.s. i know this an old thread, just hope you see it, or someone at Intel.

Hi Rod @RodOrr  ,

Yes, correct. When NUC8i7HNK is in sleep mode, short depress (less than 4 seconds) on the Power Button will wake the NUC. Please refer to Table 7, page 29 in the Technical Product Specification).  But this solution is valid if the Power Button is reachable (and this is not always the case).

Leon

Thanks Leon,

My NUC is NUC105FNK4 and pressing Power Button in sleep mode didn't have the desired effect of waking up the NUC. I had to force a shutdown. Consequently, I turned off the Sleep option.

Maybe I'll revisit it and play around with it a bit more, but it did happen on more than one occasion and was the reason I found this old thread here on this forum. I'll also check to make sure my BIOS is up to date. I only recently acquired this NUC, previous owner used it as a media centre with Ubuntu.

P.S. I should add that I'm running Win11 Pro.

Hello Rod,

Should be no problem with Power Button waking in NUC FN as well.  Please read the section 1.13 in the Technical Product Specification

I've NUC10i7FNH (running on Windows 11 Pro) and it is waking from sleep either by Logitech keyboard/mouse (with USB adapter) or by Power Button.

I have to add that the default sleep mode in NUC FN is Modern Standby. I don't like this type of sleep and I changed in my NUC to Legacy S3 Standby.  If you want to try this follow my instructions:

1. Since changing the Sleep Type support from Modern Standby to Legacy S3 Standby may require the system reinstall, please prepare full image of your drive before starting this procedure.

2. Important:  Start with setting Windows into SAFE boot mode:

3. While in Windows, press Windows key + r. Run msconfig

4. Chose Boot tab and enable Safe boot. Reboot your system.

5. During system boot enter Bios again. Now open Advanced > Power > Secondary Power Settings > Sleep type support and change it to Legacy S3 Standby.  Verify That ACPI Support is enabled (if not, enable it). Click on F10, confirmed by "Y", to save settings and exit to Windows.

6. While in Windows, press Windows key + r. Run msconfig

7. Chose Boot tab and uncheck Safe boot. Reboot your system.

Hope this will help

Leon

Thanks again for all your help Leon,

Before I consider delving into a sleep mode bios change I want to try some more tests with power button wake up.

I found Intel's DSA app and downloaded it (very neat little tool). Turns out I needed a firmware update and one driver update (Realtek audio) which i duly installed. So now I'll play around with waking up sleep mode with power button.

Might not get around to it for a couple of days but will get back to you and let you know how it went.

Cheers

Hi Leon,

Did some testing. Sleep mode still at S0, latest firmware installed.

Did various tests varying screen and device sleep timers.

In all cases I can now wake up the nuc using power button (short 2 second push), keyboard or mouse (both bluetooth, no usb).

I wondered whether I was really in sleep mode because the bluetooth devices woke the nuc up, but, the timing was right as expected and the blue power light on nuc was blinking.

Interesting re the bluetooth responding, but I'm happy and even better I now have the choice of power button or bluetooth device.

Thanks again, Rod
