Why does my NUC shut down when I plug in a 3.5mm audio cable into the line-in jack?

Hello,

I have an 8i7HNK and I am trying to record audio from a four track cassette recorder. I swear I've done this before with no problems.

I've tried three times now and my NUC abruptly shuts down each time.

the first time, my four track was on and when I placed the 3.5 cable into the NUC... the NUC shut down after windows prompted me what device it was that I plugged in (headphones, line-in... etc)

confused... I tried again but, this time my four track was OFF when I placed the 3.5mm cable into the NUC. everything was fine until I powered on the four-track and then the NUC shut down again.

I thought perhaps maybe it had something to do with which output of the four track I was using. I tried a different output and the NUC behaved the same way.

any insight as to why this might be happening?

thanks

moldygoldy, Thank you for posting in the Intel® Communities Support.

In reference to this scenario, could you please provide a detailed description of how are you connecting the four-track to the Intel® NUC? If it is possible please provide a screenshot so we can see the details of the connection.

You mentioned that you have done this before, were you using this same Intel® NUC or did you use a different computer?

Dod you have the option to test a different 3.5 audio cable?

For testing purposes, do you have the option to connect the four-track to a different computer to confirm if it is working properly?

We can always try a BIOS update to the latest version which is 0058:

Hello Alberto,

Yes I can go over how I was connecting my four-track to the NUC. I can provide a picture of my setup when I get home from work.

I'm using a tascam portastudio 424 mark ii -- the first two times I was using the sub-mix out of the four-track -- which uses a stereo RCA connection. The cable was an RCA to 3.5mm cable. I was plugging this directly into the line-in/headphone jack of the NUC which is at the far right side of the front panel.

the third time I was using the headphone out of the four-track and a different cable -- this was a 1/4" to 3.5mm cable.

So when I did it before, it was the same four-track and the same NUC. BUT I've since added in a new piece of gear -- it's a rackmount spring reverb unit -- an electro-voice EVT4500. the audio signal passes thru this device and back into the four-track to be blended in.

Yes I have another 3.5mm to RCA audio cable I can use, and another computer.

I'm just curious -- is there a chance I'm passing some sort of low level electrical signal into the NUC which is why its freaking out? I am just worried I am causing harm to my NUC and do not want to be hurting it

moldygoldy, Thank you very much for providing all those details.

Perfect, excellent, once you get the chance please provide the picture and let us know the results of the trying another RCA cable and another computer.

Before determine if there is a reason for a low-level electrical signal that shuts the NUC off, please disconnect all your peripherical components attache to the Intel® NUC and let only the minimum components, some external devices might be drawing the power from the Intel® NUC as well.

Just to confirm, what you are trying to do is to record the audio from the four-track device into the Intel® NUC, is that correct?

Are you using an application to do this, what is the name of it?

Do you have the option to connect speakers or a microphone to see if the Intel® NUC does the same?

Please test the Intel® NUC without the Electro-voice EVT4500 connected to it to verify if the problem persists that way.

Ok so, here's a few pictures of my set-up. I did not spend much time at home yesterday so I did not get to try out the other computer or cable, or without the reverb unit.

So the only other devices connected to the NUC are my monitor, mouse, and an external had drive which has its own power supply. i'm using a bluetooth keyboard.

Yes, I'm trying to record audio into the NUC -- that is correct.

I am using Ableton 9 for this.

I've used the same jack on the NUC to use headphones before. I haven't in a while but, I will try that today. I will also experiment with the other computer and without using the reverb unit.

edit:

so I just remembered a detail I should point out. I used the same RCA to 3.5mm cable to record audio FROM the NUC TO the four-track with no problems.
