Win10 based NUC will not auto-sleep with HP E320t touch screen display

I have two Intel NUCs, one of which has a brand new install of Windows 10.  Both computers suffer from the same problem.  As they start to go through the sleep process after the prescribed inactive time, they turn back on.  I've isolated this to the USB port on the HP e320t monitor.  This is a touch screen monitor, if that matters.

I have the most recent drivers from both Intel and HP.  I am wondering if anyone has suggestions on what might be going wrong.

Hello HanMan

Thank you for posting on the Intel® communities.

In order to review this further, could you please provide us with the following information?

1- Are the Intel® NUCs new devices? Do they have the exact same configuration? (Operating system version, RAM, and SSD models, are both connected to an HP* E320t Touch Monitor? same type and brand of cable? etc...)

2- Did this configuration (Intel NUC + HP* monitor) work fine before? If yes, were any recent hardware or software changes that might relate to the point when the behavior started?

3- When you said you have "isolated this to the USB port on the HP* monitor", do you mean the USB upstream connector and the USB HUB? Please provide details regarding how you determined this.

4- What type of devices or peripherals do you have connected to the USB HUB ports on the monitor? Also, if you disconnect the NUC from the USB upstream on the monitor and connect the peripheral/devices directly to the Intel® NUC's USB ports (without any other USB HUB), does the behavior persist?

5- What type of video cables and video ports are you using to connect the Intel® NUC and the monitor? Are you using a straight-through connection with a single cable? Or are you using any type of video adapters, converters, or dockings? Please provide details.

6- For both Intel® NUCs, please run the Intel® System Support Utility (Intel® SSU) to gather more details about the systems:

  • Download the Intel® SSU and save the application on your computer
  • Open the application, check the "Everything" checkbox, and click "Scan" to see the system and device information. The Intel® SSU defaults to the "Summary View" on the output screen following the scan. Click the menu where it says "Summary" to change to "Detailed View".
  • To save your scan, click Next and click Save.
  • Once you have saved the file (.txt file), please attach it to your reply.

To upload and attach a file, use the "Drag and drop here or browse files to attach" option below the response textbox.

Hi Andreew,

Summary:
The NUCs are not new devices.  One is a NUC5i5RYH and the other (one I just setup) is a NUC6i7KYK, and they have different RAM, hard drive space, etc.  Essentially the only real commonality is the Windows 10 operating system.  I had been using the i5 as my shop Windows device, but I started having the sleep problem.  I can't identify when, but it was a long time ago and I think it started after a Windows update.  It could also have been after I installed Intel drivers.

Recently I decided to delve into this problem, so I took my decommissioned i7 NUC and installed a fresh Windows 10 OS onto it, loaded the Intel drivers, and then tested the sleep.  I should have done this before I loaded the Intel drivers, but unfortunately I did not.  I can confirm that even after these few steps, I was unable to get the system to go to sleep on its own.  I can manually "sleep" it, but it will not do so automatically.

I have a single HP E230t monitor, and both have exhibited the same behavior when connected to the monitor.  The E230t is a touch screen monitor that incorporates a USB hub.  When I disconnect the monitor from the computer (USB), then sleep works fine.  Of course, in this configuration I can use neither the hub feature of the monitor nor the touch screen.  Both of these are critical in my use case.... Aside from the sleep issue, the USB and touch screen work fine on the monitor.

Specific answers:
1. I addressed the NUC setup above.  The OS versions are identical (most recent Microsoft updates), same Intel drivers, same HP drivers.  The cable is moved from one computer to another and is a not a name brand cable

2.  Honestly, I think it did work a long time ago (as in 1.5 years ago) but I don't recall completely.  I vaguely recall this problem starting after either a Windows update or when I installed the Intel drivers.

3. As mentioned above, my isolation comment is based on the fact that if I disconnect the USB cable that runs between the NUC and the monitor, from either the computer side *OR* the monitor side, the problem disappears.  I believe this adequately demonstrates that the issue is triggered when the USB is connected.  This does not mean the issue is necessarily in the HP monitor.  It could be in the driver.  My strong hunch is that the 'sleep' is not being propagated to the monitor and that the 'active' USB port is somehow "waking" the computer again.  But that is just a hunch.

4. I often will have a memory stick plugged into the USB of the monitor, but to remove this as a potential source of the problem, I have removed all devices from the USB ports on the monitor (note: the touch screen is not something I can disconnect as it is internally wired within the monitor).  The problem persists even with no external devices connected to the monitor.

5. I am using generic HDMI cables.  On the i5 computer I used a mini to standard connector, of course, and on the i7 NUC I used a standard to standard HDMI configuration.

Thank you for your detailed request for information.  Please ask away if I haven't provided what you are looking for.  I do appreciate your time and effort.

Regards,
Alan

Behavior wise, this is what happens....

If I set a fast sleep timeout (say 1 minute) on Windows, after the prescribed time, the screen goes blank.  It looks as though the whole thing is going to sleep, which is great.  However, after 15 seconds or so (I can get more accurate time, if this is important), the screen turns back on.  This cycle will continue to repeat itself forever, as best as I can tell.

Also consistent with the removal of the cable test, if I go into the Device Manager and disable the 'Generic USB Hub', the sleep works fine too.  However, this once again prevents me from using either the monitor USB hub or the touch screen built into the monitor.

Hello HanMan

Thank you for your response and for all these details.

We would like to inform you that due to the Intel® NUC Kit NUC5i5RYH has been discontinued, Intel Customer Service no longer supports inquiries for it, but perhaps fellow community members have the knowledge to jump in and help with this product. You may also find the Discontinued Products website helpful to address your request.

Having said that, we will focus on the issue with the Intel® NUC Kit NUC6i7KYK. Thank you for your understanding.

As per the HP* monitor's User Guide, if the monitor's power saving control is disabled, it may cause issues with sleep mode. Could you please verify if this feature is enabled? Open the OSD menu and select Power Control > Auto-Sleep Mode and set auto-sleep to On.

Also, it seems with are missing the Intel® SSU report. Please kindly provide us with a report from the Intel® NUC Kit NUC6i7KYK following these steps:

  • Download the Intel® SSU and save the application on your computer
  • Open the application, check the "Everything" checkbox, and click "Scan" to see the system and device information. The Intel® SSU defaults to the "Summary View" on the output screen following the scan. Click the menu where it says "Summary" to change to "Detailed View".
  • To save your scan, click Next and click Save.
  • Once you have saved the file (.txt file), please attach it to your reply.

To upload and attach a file, use the "Drag and drop here or browse files to attach" option below the response textbox.

Hi Andrew,

Sorry about the delay.  I had some thing come up and then after I ran the report, I wanted to review the information before posting.  I'm a bit on the 'secure' side of things so I wanted to check it for PII.  There were a few things that I redacted, but otherwise it is fine and posted below.  Everyone seems to remove serial numbers on forums which is a little curious to me, but I figured I might as well follow suite.

I also wanted to take the time to check the manual you referenced in a previous post.  My monitor has "Auto Sleep" set to ON.  In addition, "Power On Recall" is set to ON, and the Sleep Timer is setup to shut the monitor off at midnight.  It should be noted, that once the monitor performs this action, then the NUC *will* go to sleep and remain so.  However, this eliminates my use of the USB port as a 'wake' device as the monitor is truly OFF until I press the ON button.  It is a bit of an odd use case.  I could live with that, but I really would prefer my machine go to 'sleep' automatically after the Windows configured timeout period, not as a function of the monitor setting (whose granularity is a bit like doing surgery with a sledge hammer).

Here is the service dump (again, minor redactions, essentially removing all serial numbers and Network SID info):

Hello HanMan

We have not heard back from you so we will proceed to close this thread now. Since you mentioned that sleep works fine when removing the USB cable or when disable the 'Generic USB Hub' on Device Manager, chances are this issue is triggered by the monitor. In this case, we recommend checking this further with the monitor manufacturer for further assistance and debugging. For your convenience, here is the link to HP* Support.

If you need any additional information, please submit a new question as this thread will no longer be monitored.

Best regards,

Andrew G.

Hi Andrew,

I am sorry... I thought I uploaded the file, but I guess it didn't go through.  I'll try again...  I've run the report but removed the PII serial numbers because that seems to be a pretty standard practice now.  Ditto with the SID.

I can tell you that Auto-Sleep is set to ON.  In addition, Power-On Recall is set to ON.  I have a sleep timer setup for midnight and when the monitor goes to sleep, *generally* the NUC will as well.  But that is a pretty brute force way of trying to get the system to sleep.  I've also noticed that if I have anything plugged into the monitor USB (such as a Windows Hello webcam) I *think* that this may even prevent the sleep to occur when the monitor is supposed to power down (not sure about that one).  Anyhow, here is my system report:
