Windows 10 Update fails on Skull Canyon

Hello,

Every time I restart my skull canyon for a windows update (ex from windows insider 17040 to 17046), I get a BSOD on reboot, mentioning a winload.efi file missing.

After turning off and on again, I am back to the current version of windows, without any issue.

I reinstalled the system from scratch and the behavior continues...

Any suggestion?

Re: Windows 10 Update fails on Skull Canyon

Hi ladparis: Thank you very much for contacting the Intel® NUC communities. We will do our best to try to fix this problem.

In regard to your inquiry, we can try a BIOS update to the latest version, 0050:

Additionally, you can always get in contact with Microsoft directly in order to get further suggestions about this scenario:

Any further questions, please let me know.

Re: Windows 10 Update fails on Skull Canyon

ladparis: Thank you very much for letting us know that information.

The problem could be related to the Windows image installed on the NUC, in that case, if you have the option to install Windows from the disc itself please try that or you can always create a new ISO image from the disc and then create USB bootable device:

https://www.howtogeek.com/228886/how-to-create-iso-files-from-discs-on-windows-mac-and-linux/ https://www.howtogeek.com/228886/how-to-create-iso-files-from-discs-on-windows-mac-and-linux/

Most of the users recommend to use Rufus to make the image bootable:

If the problem persists or if you do not have the options above, then to contact Microsoft directly will be the next thing to do.

Any questions, please let me know.

Regards,

Re: Windows 10 Update fails on Skull Canyon

Had the Same Problem, you will have to do a Clean install to get it to work. Download the windows media creation tool, i would download the iso and use rufus, i have had some fails with the auto create usb, and have to re download again. I have not seen or had any problems, been a few weeks on it or a month? yep

Re: Windows 10 Update fails on Skull Canyon

Even after reinstalling windows from scratch and get everything up and running, I got the same issue at the next windows update.

Re: Windows 10 Update fails on Skull Canyon

During the Windows install, when you get to the screen where you select the drive/partition on which to install Windows, delete every partition on the drive and then specify for Windows to be installed to the drive's free space (which now encompasses the entire drive). Do not create any partitions!

What this is doing is ensuring that the Windows installer will properly recreate (instead of just use what's there) the partition table (and switch to UEFI (GPT) format). It also gives the installer full control over what partitions are created/used on the drive.

Hope this helps,
