My HP laptop evidently has the issue where the Windows 11 version 22H2 will not install on my laptop due to an incompatibility with the current version of the Intel Smart Sound Technology drivers. Any suggestions on how can I resolve this issue or when updated drivers will be released?
Current SST Audio Controller driver version - 10.24.0.4442
Current SST OED driver - 10.24.4442.201
Laptop - HP Pavilion Laptop 15-cs3xxx
Windows 11 Pro version 21H2

Hello grandpalarry777,
Thank you for posting on the Intel️® communities.
You should know that for drivers and support for Intel® Smart Sound Technology on your laptops, we recommend that you refer back to your motherboard vendor (OEMs) for your laptop, as they can provide you with the required support.
Also, you mentioned that the issue is due to an incompatibility limitation for the new Operating System update. We would recommend contacting Microsoft for further support regarding this matter.
Best regards,
Jean O.

I'm experiencing the same issue as you in trying to install version 22H2. However, my machine is a Lenovo ThinkPad. I was in live contact with Microsoft Support via voice chat yesterday (9/30). I allowed the tech to do a scan of my machine and he confirmed that the problem is an Intel component. Microsoft is aware of the problem, he said, and their engineers are "working" on it. Being that it's Microsoft, I take that with a grain of salt.
Prior to contacting Microsoft, I was in contact with Lenovo support, who knew very little about the situation. I imagine that will change as more people contact them.
I tried scanning for a later driver through the Windows Device Manager. The result was that I have the most "up-to-date" driver already installed. On its website, Lenovo has a utility that will automatically scan your computer for drivers that need updates. The only result I received was an update to a drive completely unrelated to the issue. HP probably has a similar utility on its website that you could at least try.
It will be interesting to see who steps up first to resolve the problem - Intel, Microsoft or the manufacturers. I will keep you apprised here of anything further that I learn and hope that you will do the same.

Thanks for the response. I also tried searching for a newer driver in Windows Update and through HP with the same (lack of) results. I have also posted my concern on HP's forums but haven't heard anything yet.
Hopefully one of the entities involved will be able to resolve the problem in a timely manner.

I posted on the Lenovo forums as well and, like you, haven't heard anything yet either. Going back to the Lenovo site, I did come across a lengthy article regarding Lenovo devices that had been tested for the 22H2 update and found my specific model on the list of "compatible" machines. So there's hope yet. Perhaps HP has a similar list that you can consult. The article went on to stress getting the latest driver updates through Windows Update before doing the upgrade. That certainly hasn't worked, so it makes me wonder from where Lenovo got the drivers to run their test.

Just heard from HP Forums. They stated that since it isn't only HP computers that are having the problem, it is something that MS has to resolve.
Hopefully, they (MS) will actually look into and fix the problem.
One thing I haven't seen is what actually breaks with 22H2 installed on these affected devices. I assume there are audio issues but haven't seen anything specific.

Thanks for the update. It gives me hope that what the MS tech told me is true, that MS engineers are looking into the matter. To answer your question about what's "broken," from what I've been able to glean, it's both the Intel Smart Sound Technology (SST) Controller and Intel Smart Sound Technology (SST) OED that are causing the issue. You can find them both in the Device Manager under System Devices. The suggested "remedy" is to upgrade to version 10.30.00.5714, or version 10.29.00.5714, or better. The last four digits must end in 5714 or later. Both of my drivers are well below those version numbers but I don't recommend googling the "recommended" updates. Intel even infers that any updates they may push out are generic and may not be compatible with your OEM motherboard. I think the safest course is to wait it out until either MS or the manufacturer pushes out the updated versions to us. Let's keep fingers crossed it's soon.

I also posted our issue in the Microsoft forums and want to update you on the responses I received. The first was not relevant to you as it dealt with Lenovo remedies, which I had already tried without success. The second was more ambitious. The respondent suggested a "Repair Install" and gave a link to a website with instructions on how to do it. I won't give the website he did, but you can google repair install if you're curious. Not only did the repair install seem complicated for someone with just enough tech experience to be dangerous but also may be overkill for the problem. Much as it's annoying right now not to be able to make the upgrade, I think I'd rather wait for MS.

pbcguy,
Thanks for the information. I will check into the 'repair install' to see if I want to make the attempt.

grandpalarry,
I hope you have not made the attempt to do a "repair install." This morning, from a forum I posted to on another website, I received a link to the following article. It looks like we're going to have to rely on our manufacturers to update those drivers.

Interesting article. Unfortunately, it gets confusing. Intel and MS state that it is up to the device manufacturer to resolve the issue, but the manufacturer (at least HP) states that since the problem exists on more than one brand of computer, they aren't responsible for issuing an update???
I wonder if there is a location to download the newer version of the SST drivers so we can attempt to resolve the issue ourselves? It may not work, but I'd be willing to make the attempt. (I haven't been able to find such a site yet.)

grandpalarry,
I think it's about to get more contentious. I just got off the phone with Lenovo Premiere Support who seemed unaware of the problem. The tech said that no bulletins had come down. He did, however, lead me to a place on the Lenovo website where he had me download three driver programs that would update those pesky Intel drivers to the latest and great version that Lenovo has. It was a process that I wouldn't have been able to do on my own. But when I checked the version number of the drivers that were "updated," they were the same versions as the ones I already had. It's still an open case.

I just received a link from the Lenovo Forums to the following article from Microsoft, which has only served to confuse the situation further. According to the article, "Only devices with both an Intel 11th Gen Core processors and an Intel SST driver version of 10.29.0.5152 or 10.30.0.5152 are affected by this issue." The version installed in my machine is far lower than this as is yours. I asked for clarification from the Lenovo tech who posted the link that may be our problem isn't with these drivers at all but is being caused by something else. Will keep you posted.
