Windows Error Code when accessing NAS Drive

Hello,

I am trying to figure out an issue with a NUC8i5bek. I purchased two of these recently and I am having issues with just one of them, NUC #1 (work) and NUC#2 (Not Working).  I have it connected to my network and I get the Can't access share drive with the Error Code: 0x80004005. I have made sure it is the one specific NUC by connecting NUC#1 to the same location and moving NUC#2 to the NUC#1's location. The issue is definitively with NUC#2. I have updated all the drivers, bios, and windows updates. I have gone through several steps to try to fix this with guides online, for example this one: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/error-code-0x80004005-while-connecting-nas-drives/20f0c283-49a6-4731-8c15-252bdeb04e10. I have not been able to fix the issue. I would like to know the following:

  • Could this be an issue with hardware in anyway?
    • I do have other issues with HDMI port. Although the issues have reduced with the latest bios, but there are still other issues I have seen.
  • How can I reset the Windows OS to factory settings?
  • Is there a way to copy the windows image from NUC#1 over to NUC#2?
  • Also is there any way I can get more details from this issue?

  Thanks,

When you are unable to connect to the NAS, can you access the internet? Can you connect to the other NUC? (Aside: you will need to add a share to the other NUC in order to access it).

Just to be sure, on both of these NUCs, please download and run the Intel System Support Utility for Windows and have it save the report to a file. Then, using the Drag and drop here or browse files to attach dialog below the edit box for the body of your response post, upload and attach this file to the response post.

Hello,

Thank you for the reply and help. Yes I was able to access the internet with it and I am able to access other shared folders. I am not sure why it is only this share that has a problem with only this nuc. I have attached the files to this post.

Thanks,

I am seeing some differences between the configurations of the two NUCs:

  1. NUC1 running BIOS 77 while NUC2 running BIOS 85.
  2. NUC1 running WiFi driver 21.10.1.2 while NUC2 running WiFi driver 21.120.2.1.
  3. NUC1 has security updates to 10/17/20 while NUC2 has security updates to 11/9/20.

Items 2 not that important (since using Ethernet connection) but others could be.

Hope this helps,

Hello,

Thanks for the effort. USince I am actively working on fixing NUC2 I updated to the latest drivers/bios/updates hoping one of those would fix the issue I am facing. The BIOS update did fix some issues I was running into with the HDMI, specifically when Netflix would start up the audio would go out. This would account for the differences. I am probably not going to update to latest on NUC1 since it is working like a champ.

Thanks again for the help.

Hi ericf

Error 0x80004005 is more of a configuration related issue than a NUC hardware related problem.

I would recommend the following:

  • Set the system to either use IPV6 or IPV4 depending on your network set up
  • Try to reset Windows Sockets, rum CMD --> netsh winsock reset
  • Make sure SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support is enabled in Windows Features

If you still have issues, I would recommend that you check with Microsoft* support for help with your configuration.

Hello,

I am still having the same issue along with other issues with HDMI. First regarding the network issue:

  • Set the system to either use IPV6 or IPV4 depending on your network set up
    • I configured the NUC to support IPV4 and IPV6 and both. However this did not fix the error
  • Try to reset Windows Sockets, rum CMD --> netsh winsock reset
    • I did this several times and it did not fix the error.
  • Make sure SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support is enabled in Windows Features
    • I disabled and enabled this feature and it did not fix the error.

Just to bring up the past notes to this issue. I have two NUC's they are the same exact model NUC's, and purchased at the same time. One shows the issue and one does not show. I have made sure the configurations are the same. However it is just the one NUC which shows the issue. It is accessing the same drive.

I am now running into an HDMI issue with this NUC. When first powered on the sound comes on and it works fine. However when I start any sort of Video, run Netflix or anything else requiring Sound or video. The video flashes and the sound drops out. Please any help would be required. I have done the following on the NUC: updated to latest drivers, updated windows software, and made sure all the connections were fine.

I have started a topic in the windows support however they just brushed me off not reading any of the details. Here is Link to Windows Topic .

If I could get some support to these issues which are mounting now with this specific NUC.

What happens if you swap the drives between the two? Does the problem move to the other system?

Hey Scott,

Thanks for all the replies btw. I was also an Intel employee. Worked at the Hillsboro, Oregon site.

I wish I could swap the drives however I fear I will void any warranty if I disassemble the NUC. I purchased it all assembled with a ssd drive installed. I would like to have this machine reset to factory defaults, but I am really struggling here as I do not know of any way to load the default windows install. I have found posts where disabling SMBv1.0 would make it work or enabling NetBios would allow it to work. I even found a post where the person swapped the motherboard out, for the same version of motherboard and it worked. I am sure there had to be some sort of software reset going on there to fix the error but going back to my issue I cannot understand where the issue is as I have two identical NUC's and one works and the other doesn't.

Thanks,

I called someplace in HF3 home for my entire career with Intel. Different organizations, different locations, but always HF3. Not many people at Intel can say that they kept the same phone number for 21 years!

As I said, you do not have identical systems. The Windows images are definitely different. Only by cloning one drive to the other would they be close enough to call it a wash.

Are your systems from a 3rd party (SimplyNUC, for example)? If not, swapping a M.2 drive from one system to another should not void your warranty. Alternatively, you could clone the drives. Either way, I would recommend that you also make sure that the BIOS versions are the same and that the BIOS configurations are set to defaults.

I worked at the HF3,HF2, JF3, and Cornell Oaks (which probably no longer exists).

I was able to figure out that it is indeed the image loaded. The issue followed the image and so I am wondering if there was a way to clone the image. I remember Ghost images but I was more a hardware guy that software. I will do some googling and figure out if there is a easy/good way to clone the image and transfer it over to the other nuc.

Or possibly download a windows thumb drive installation to reinstall windows.

If you have some hints I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Used Macrium Reflect Free. I cloned the working NUC image and transferred it over. I am able to access the network drive no problem now. I wonder what setting in windows it is because I went through a lot of debug and steps. I wish the Windows forum was as help as this forum.

I do have the HDMI issue still present with the NUC though, I think I might have to create a separate topic for me to get some help on that though.

Thanks,

Yes, this is a good point at which to end this conversation. Please do open a new conversation for the HDMI issue(s).
