external dvd on nuc5i5ryh

Can I use an external DVD/RW on the NUC5i5ryh blue or yellow USB port? I have not been able to find any specs on the current available from these ports. Don't know if I should assume that the ports are compliant with USB specs.

I have used both a powered external DVD drive and an un-powered external DVD drive on a nuc6 (blue) and a nuc7 (yellow) without any problems whatsoever.

For future reference, the NUCs meet the USB standards, which require,

  • (Black) USB 2.0 ports must provide 500mA.
  • (Blue) USB 3.0 Ports must provide 900mA.
  • (Orange) USB 3.0 Charging Ports must provide 1.5A.
  • USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type C (USB-C) ports must provide 3A.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB# Power USB - Wikipedia for more information.

Thanks for that info Scott. I actually think that you provided that to me way back when I bought the NUC, but I forgot. DUMB. Anyway, just need to find an external USB DVD that works with those specs. Appreciate the response.

Here's one to consider (US$26): https://www.amazon.com/External-Cocopa-Portable-Rewriter-Transfer/dp/B076KMVL8D Amazon.com: Cocopa USB 3.0 Portable CD DVD +/-RW Drive.
