Is this normal, and can I simply kill the service when this occurs?

No, do not kill the service.
Are you on battery or is your battery bad?

The unit is new and the battery is in good condition, but the process a) wakes my machine while I'm not using it and b) the load on the machine is such that the battery life prediction drops to <3 hours (from 12hrs typical during word processing, for ex). I.e. - the task is using approximately 10% of the battery charge before going back to sleep - or at least it did last time. I don't know what triggers it or stops it, there is no indication that the process i running except that the fans come on at 100%.
