SSD Firmware Update Tool not working on 32 bit PC (Intel Atom)

Hello,

I am trying to perform a firmware update for a Intel SSD 540s, but I the Intel® SSD Firmware Update Tool (issdfut 3.0.10.zip) won't boot on my Intel Atom 32 bit laptop where the SSD is installed. I am getting this message:

„This kernel requires an x86-64 CPU, but only detected an i686 CPU. Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate to your CPU."

But according to the documentation, the FUT should work on 32 & 64 bit machines. What can I do?

I am using FUT on a bootable USB stick, created with the "Universal USB Installer". It is booting fine on 64 bit PCs.

Hello gregorw,

Thank you for your reply.

To answer your questions:

  1. Could I get a working result if I burn the ISO to a CD and boot from that CD?

R/ I can not assure you that it may work, but it is a possibility if you have the chance to do it.

Please try to use Rufus in ISO mode, not DD. Another option is to connect your SSD to another PC and to update your firmware in that system.

  1. Are you sure that the issdfut tool should be working on 32-bit systems? The file is called "issdfut_64_3.0.10.iso". Looks like a 64-bit version to me.

R/ Yes, as mentioned previously, I was able to boot to this tool without experiencing any issue on an Atom CPU PC in our lab.

Another option will be to try to use the Intel® Memory and Storage Tool CLI (Command-Line Interface)

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/30162?v=t

From your OS, please try to follow the Video on Intel® SSD Firmware Update and Health Monitoring Using Intel® Memory and Storage Tool (Intel® MAS) article to update your SSD firmware.

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000057393/memory-and-storage.html

  1. My Atom netbook has a working Ubuntu Linux system (32 bit) installed. I would love to run the FUT with booting this system, is that possible?

R/ The Intel® SSD Firmware Update Tool is an OS-independent tool, meaning that there is no need to have an OS installed on the PC to run. We advise you to try using Intel® MAS on your OS.

  • We would appreciate it if you can provide us with the system details by extracting the SSU logs.

The SSU logs.

1- Go to https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25293/ (for Windows*) and to https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/26735/ (for Linux) download the software.

2- When you finish downloading it, open it.

3- Attach the file generated by the tool in your reply.

We will follow up with you again the next Wednesday, the 3rd of February 2021, if we do not receive an answer from you. Please let me know if you would like to schedule a different date for the follow-up.

We will be looking forward to your reply, including this information.

Thank you for your reply. I have downloaded the Rufus USB creator tool and used that to create a boot stick from the iso. With Rufus used in "iso mode", I am getting exactly the same error as before. I also tried the previous version of FUT, 3.0.9, but got the same results again. With Rufus used in "DD mode", I am getting a different error when booting from the stick on my Intel Atom netbook.

Here is a screenshot of the first error:

Here is a screenshot of the error with a FUT boot stick created with Rufus in DD mode:

My questions now:

1. Could I get a working result if I burn the ISO to a CD and boot from that CD?

2. Are you sure that the issdfut tool should be working on 32 bit systems? The file is called "issdfut_64_3.0.10.iso". Looks like a 64 bit version to me.

3. My Atom netbook has a working Ubuntu Linux system (32 bit) installed. I would love to run the FUT with booting this system, is that possible?

Hello John, thanks for your reply. I have now burned a CD from the iso file and booted using that. Unfortunately, with the Atom netbook I am only seeing a similar message as shown in the second screenshot above, again:

"ISOLUNIX 6.04 ETCD Copyright …

Failed to load ldlinux.c32
Boot failed: press a key to retry..."

I tried to boot the CD with another PC with a Intel Core 2 processor and i945P chipset, another 32 bit system, but it can not boot here too. Same error.

It seems as if my only chance is to find a PC/notebook with 64 bit processor where I can plug the SSD in.

Hello gregorw,

Thank you for your reply.

The issue you are experiencing does not seem related to the tool; but to the system, media, or software you are using to create the bootable device.

Another option is to try with the past version of the tool to see if you experience a different behavior. The previous version of FUT can be download from here:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/29812/Intel-SSD-Firmware-Update-Tool

In case you have the opportunity of trying the same process with a different PC. Please, go ahead and try it, and do not forget to let us know the results.

We will follow up with you again the next Thursday, the 4th of February 2021, if we do not receive an answer from you. Please let me know if you would like to schedule a different date for the follow-up.

Hello,

I have tried version 3.0.9 also with the same results.

Sincerely, I have tried both Windows tools you are suggesting to create a bootable USB stick, which works on my 64 bit system, but not on the 32 bit systems. I have burned the .iso to a CD 1:1 and again, I can boot with the CD and run the FUT on my 64 bit laptop but with my 32 bit systems I am getting the errors mentioned above.

I don't know what else to do. Unfortunately I can not open the 64 bit laptop and plug in the Intel SSD there.

Hello gregorw,

Thank you for your reply.

We understand your situation and how frustrating it may be to go through the installation process of this SSD into your laptop, but up to this point, it will be the best option.

Hi there, because the problem was not solved, the FUT is not able to run on any 32bit PC I have, but also the update for this SSD did not work on 64bit machines either, I will open a new thread about that.

Just for documentation, here I want to supply the SSU logs from both 32bit machines where the FUT was not able to boot in any way, neither with a bootable USB stick, nor with a CD burned from the .iso file.

1: AsusEeePC 1000H, Intel Atom CPU N270
2: MSI Tower PC, Intel Core2
