my p5800x\SSDPF21Q016TB doesn't work in 4Kn mode under windows.

Firmware: L0310200

Driver Version: 5.3.0.1005

The drive in my hand works perfectly in 512e mode, super fast. But it's quite strange that it can't be converted to 4Kn mode under windows, no matter 11 nor server 2022. Everytime I tried to use MAS CLI to do so, failed then.

But it can be done under linux. I managed to convert it into 4Kn mode by MAS CLI for linux. And then it works perfectly in linux.

And then, when I changed the OS back to windows, while the drive was in 4Kn mode at the moment, it did not work again. It can be recognized by windows, but always said I/O error everytime I tried to read/write.

Support policy for 4K sector hard drives - Windows Server | Microsoft Learn

Since Microsoft begins supporting 4Kn drive from Windows 8, I think this drive should work in windows as a 4K sector drive. And considering of working well under linux, maybe it's a bug of windows p5800x driver?

Hello, Charlie_Chan.

Good day,

Just to confirm, you are trying to set the SSD with a sector data size of 4096, correct?

If that is the case, the LBA format should be 2:

> intelmas start -intelssd 0 -nvmeformat LBAFormat=2

Please let me know if this works for you or if the command fails, and I will follow up on November 11th in case additional time is required.

Hello, Charlie_Chan.

Thank you for posting on the Intel Community Support forums.

I received your case regarding the use of the P5800X in 4kn mode, and I will be reviewing this with you.

Please let me know the following:

1. What is the current firmware of the SSD?

- You can use "iintelmas -a -intelss X".

2. What command did you use to change the sector size?

3. Do you have another P5800X or a different model with the same issue?

I will follow up on November 7th in case additional time is required.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply.

The Firmware of this drive is L0310200, I think its the lastest, as the MAS GUI tells me.

And the windows Intel NVME driver version is 5.3.0.1005.

I use "intelmas start -intelssd 0 -nvmeformat LBAFormat=3" to do the job. The same command, works in linux, while doesn't in windows.

I have some other Intel DataCenter SSDs of different models, but they are all online and full of important data. I don't dare to do any experiment on them......

Hello BrusC_Intel,

Thank you for your reply.

The drive works now. Yes, the LBAFormat number should be 2.

But I have checked my other Intel non-Optane DC SSDs, they are all working under format 3.

And after studying some details inside this, I'm resigned to accept the fact that the definition of the LBAFormat number is not generic. In p5800x, 3 stands for 4104 sector size, while standing for 4096 in others......

Thank you again, you helped me a lot.

Best regards,

Hui
