QII supports reading memory file, but I haven't found any documentation on write memory file support. Is there a way to write some memory content to a file?

There is a feature in Quartus II call Memory Editor. You can use that to write out HEX (intel format) or MIF (Altera format) memory initialization file.

I recently did this (opening editor and filling with excel based data by copy and paste) but obtained a file, which was not able to be used by Quartus. How can this be ?
I also do wonder, why there is a fixed number of columns (8) ? Can / Should this be changed ?
