Can't generate programming files (after upgrade to Quartus 9.1)

Hi All,

I've just upgraged from Quatrus 9.0sp2 to 9.1 and I'm now getting this error message:

warning: can't generate programming files for project because design file "c:/workspace/tea133/tea133_sw_ep3c/db/scaler_gn.vhd" is encrypted. it does not have license file support that allows generation of programming files.

Now this is obviously not true; even if I didn't have a license for the IP it should still let me make a time limited SOF file right? I do actually have a license file and it includes the full VIP suite, and each component is listed in the licensing dialog of Quartus.

Has anyone else had a similar problem? Thanks in advance, Brent.

Hello, brentsinger:

I guess u do have the license for the IP but u DO NOT have the license for the version 9.1.

1 - Delete the "db" directory.

2 - markman may be right. Check the versions on your licenses (YYYY.MO). If they are pre-9.1 time-frame you may not have a license for that IP core in 9.1. You should still be able to find a way to use the 9.0 version of the core in 9.1 if you like.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the help. I did find yesterday that if I delete the /db folder I can generate a nice working .pof or .sof file with no time limits. This makes my think that my licenses are all valid; if I'm allowed to make the .sof once they must be right? Why not twice?

I'll check the dates, but I'm upgrading to 9.1sp1 right now and will post within the hour. to any altera staff: 2x 1.6Gb updates in a week is hard work; I've had trouble migrating from 9.0 to 9.1 and now I'm going to have to step cautiously again from 9.1 to 9.1sp1. I've also noticed my VIP blocks in the sopc build are far less stable now in 9.1, it's like a downgrade. My boss is looking at me like I'm (more) incompetent...

Hi again Guys,

Markman, I just re-read your post - do you think that i need a license for quartus 9.1 (web edition in my case), as well as the licenses for the IP? Or do you think that my IP licenses are older 9.0 versions that are not valid with the 9.1 versions of the IP?

I've attached a screen grab of my licenses; they all say 2010.12, they were purchased in December 2009 so I'm thinking that means they are inclusive of upgrades until December 2010.

Altera!: that's not how you spell converter.

Ragerds,

Brent.

Brent,

It looks to me like your licenses are all valid. So are you saying you have to delete the "db" directory every time you compile? I have in the past had issues where I have to delete the "db" directory if I've made some major change to the VIP blocks. Also, it's worth trying to just click the compile button again (a second time) rather than deleting the "db" directory.

Oh, with regards to your other post we were working on ... I'm going to try and reproduce it on a Stratix II board here and see if I can't find out what's giving you grief.

Hi Jakob,

Yep, I have been deleting the /db folder regularly and I get a valid .sof file each time as a result. If I don't delete the /db I have the 'encrypted scaler_gn.vhd' error.

Can I send you my project lock and stock? Send me an email address and I'll zip it up and send it through.

Thanks again, if I'm ever in Salt Lake City I owe you a few beers.

Brent.

FYI. Altera's DSP specialist indicated this is supposed to be fixed in 9.1 service pack 1. I know you upgraded ... can you confirm this?

Hi Jake,

Yes, since upgrading to 9.1 sp1 I have not had this problem again.

Thanks again and thanks to your DSP Engineer friend.
