Based on the Intel information, I bought a refurbished "Dell Optiplex 7040". I was able to download/install the Intel Unite hub and when the computer reboots, I get the "/thread/105900 Intel Unite error ID666666" error that says this is not supported. The computer is the same exact hardware specs I have seen on another 7040 but evidently you have to pay an extra $400 for the Unite certification flag in the BIOS. I can't return the PC and can't find a workaround. If the software if no cost and requires vPro, then I have the required hardware platform. Seems like a class action lawsuit waiting to happen because this is not as advertised and I'm out $400+ Is there some workaround that allows me as the owner of a supported motherboard chipset to run software as advertised.

Yes, that is correct the system you have is the same model as the one at the Intel website; however, the hub software will only install on select hardware, including the order code listed here.
The order code for the Dell OptiPlex 7040 Micro with Intel Unite (6th gen) is the following:
Order Code: CTO04AO7040MFFUS
Please check if the order code is the same you have.
Please bear in mind that this is not an Intel limitation, this is a limitation by your computer manufacturer. In this case your computer manufacturer is Dell. Dell has many Dell OptiPlex 7040, they all have probably the same specifications but some features can be limited or disabled by Dell, in this case Dell only validated the Dell OptiPlex 7040 with the order code mentioned above to work with Intel® Unite app.
You can check here the order code:

Thanks and regards,
Ivan.

The computer I have DOES MATCH those specs. It's a Dell OptiPlex 7040(specified on Intel Website), Windows 10PRo. Latest BIOS, Latest OS patches as of today. 100Gb Free space, 8GB RAM.
The problem is that the config did not include the Intel Unite software so it appears that even if you have the correct hardware specs, you cannot run the software because it wasn't purchased with the PC. Your website does not specify this and your response further clouds the issue because I have hardware that meets your specifications for the Hub.

This app has been installed and test with different users and it works perfectly find, if you system don't meet the requirements we cannot guarantee that it will work properly especially because this is a refurbish system and a lot of thing could've been changed that we don't know.
This is an app that you need to download and install is not including in any configuration, the system need to support vPro technology, please check /docs/DOC-5693 How To Find Intel® vPro™ Technology Based PCs, you can also check the following video:

Are you 100% sure that you got it with "vPro enabled" ?
Dell ships optiplexes in no vpro and vpro enabled options... without the vPro, it probably won't work.

Welp... just tried it myself with a Latitude E6540 I have here with vPro, with the same error code you got.
"Intel Unite app cannot run on this hardware configuration. Please check with your platform vendor for more information. Intel Unite app will now exit. 0 ID666666"
So there is certainly more to it than just the posted requirements.

The page above shows Dell OptiPlex 7040 which is what I have. I've been through everything and verified the hardware will run the hub. According to the steps above, I have vPro and it's "enabled" because this test passed:
(the first MEBx screen will have an option for "Intel(R) AMT Configuration" if it is an Intel vPro system with the Intel AMT manageability features turned on in the System BIOS).
From what it sounds like, Intel allows vendors to sell systems with vPro on the board but somehow not enabled and further shows that vendors are allowed to charge extra for Unite which means it's not free as all marketing suggests. The software is tied to something and we're being lied to. I've been working this problem for over 2 months and still no resolution. If I try to install on a system without vPro, it clearly states I don't have vPro and won't install. On this system, it does install so it recognizes the hardware but something else keeps it from running. If vPro and AMT are Intel products, where is the utility to enable/modify those settings?
Please stop pointing me back to multiple links on what is required because I have verified the hardware meets the required specs. I want to know how to get a version of the software that is not tied to a vendor and works with the hardware. I've looked through all the dlls in the platform check directory and can see the vendor information specified in each one.
No vPro System
System with vPro will install the software but not run it:

For a very few dollars more the new 7050 is shipping with Unite -- i'd suggest keeping the most current hardware if you're going to get them.
