Software compatibility between processors

Hello,

 

I'm interested in upgrading a server that I run, but I want to ensure the software that runs on the previous system can run on the newer one. Can software that was compiled and executed for a Xeon E5-2640 v4 be ported to a system with a Xeon Gold 6238T? Are there any capabilities or compilation rules that would make the transfer impossible due to changes or removals between these processor families?
