Xeon W-1300 series on W480E chipset?

Since the 11th gen Core CPUs are working on the W480E chipset, shouldn’t the W-1300 Xeon’s also work?

I’ve seen this notice from Intel regarding the W480 chipset and Xeon W-1300s, but nothing is mentioned about W480E.
https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000059137/processors/intel-xeon-processors.html

Looking at the Supermicro X12SCZ-F motherboard for example. It supports 10th/11th Core as well as Xeon W-1200 series. Isn’t the 11th gen Core and the W-1300 series in many ways more or less the same? (Except for ECC support…)

Hello b3rrytech,

I hope this message finds you well.

Thank you for reaching out to Intel Community Support!

As you correctly mentioned, the Intel Xeon W-1300 series processors are designed for workstation platforms and are compatible with both the Intel W480 (with appropriate BIOS updates) and W580 chipsets. These processors share architectural similarities with the 11th Gen Intel Core (Rocket Lake-S) family and offer features such as:

Intel UHD Graphics P750 with 32 Execution Units

Support for up to 128GB of DDR4-3200 ECC memory

PCIe Gen4 support (on W580 chipset)

Both the Xeon W-1300 and W-1200 series utilize the LGA 1200 socket, which is also compatible with select 10th and 11th Gen Intel Core processors.

Upon reviewing the Supermicro X12SCZ motherboard documentation, it appears that this board is equipped with the Intel W480E chipset, which is tailored for embedded applications, as opposed to the standard W480 chipset designed for workstation use.

For your reference:

Supermicro X12SCZ User Manual: https://www.supermicro.com/manuals/motherboard/X12/MNL-2257.pdf

Intel® W480E Chipset Specifications: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/203696/intel-w480e-chipset/specifications.html

Intel® W480 Chipset Specifications: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/201910/intel-w480-chipset/specifications.html

Regarding your concern about the Xeon W-1300 not being listed as supported on the X12SCZ motherboard, this could be due to specific hardware or firmware limitations unique to the board. We recommend reaching out directly to Supermicro for confirmation on processor compatibility before making any final decisions.

Please let us know if you need further assistance!

Best regards,

Hi! Thank you for your detailed answer!

Your findings regarding this is equal to mine. It seems that there are a few possibilities here:
1. Supermicro never tested the W-1300 series on the X12SCZ, but it might still work as 11th gen Core works.
2. Supermicro never tested the W-1300 series on the X12SCZ, due to them knowing something that there is a hardware limitation.
3. Supermicro tested the W-1300 series on the X12SCZ and had problems so it didn’t work.
4. Supermicro never tested the W-1300 series on the X12SCZ, because the update from W-1200 series was minimal and this generation was an “in between” generation that wasn’t very popular and the didn’t want to waste money on testing a unpopular product.

My guess is #1 or #4.

I’ve reached out to Supermicro but their answer is more or less the same as stated in the manual. Only use tested CPUs.
“The W-1300 series, although technically compatible with the chipset used on the board, not officially supported and not tested on the X12SCZ motherboard.”

I think my best option is to take a chance and purchase a Xeon W-1300 series CPU and test it on my boards.
