Intel Pro 1000 Fiber Server Adatper

I recently purchased an Intel Pro 1000 Fiber NIC but I am experiencing problems getting it to link up to my 100 mb switch. Recently, I've been told that fiber NIC are hard coded to run at a predefined speed and that a 1Gb Fiber NIC will not link up to a 100 Mb switch. Is this correct?
