NUC DC53427hye. It reboots itself quite a few times when it start. Everything else is normal. Could that be a problem with the power supply?

Hi, I own a nuc dc53427hye. Recently I have problem with starting the unit. Every time I start it, it will reboot itself till it's normal. I don't see any software failure. I opened it, didn't see anything abnormal. I searched on the internet, it was mentioned maybe there's a power shortage regarding to power, it needs a replacement or some sort. However, I don't see and power unit like the normal PC and the power cord seems fine. Would anyone know what's wrong with the unit?

Hello User15887641020284995330,

The interactive technical support for Intel® NUC Kit DC53427HYE has been discontinued. We are moving this thread to the Discontinued Products forum for peer-to-peer support.

Hopefully, other peers will assist you.

I am not sure that this person on the Internet was referring to, but the power supplies on the NUCs either work or fail. I have never seen one brown out. You could try using a different power supply and see if that makes a difference.

The most common reason for what you are experiencing is as a result of a memory bus lockup. The Watchdog Timer triggers the reset of the system when it isn't periodically reset itself. A memory bus lockup will occur when the memory controllers (either in the processor or in the SODIMM) fails to recognize valid data on the bus. The most common cause of this is noise. All components generate some amount of noise. As they age, components can generate even more noise. The motherboard attempts to dampen this noise but, if it reaches levels where the data cannot be distinguished from the noise, transfers fail and lockups can occur. The other possibility is a memory controller in the processor or the SODIMM failing. This can be an age-related failure, something damaged by static, etc.

So, what can you do about this? If you've been running with two SODIMMs installed, try booting with only one of them installed. If this seems to work, move the installed SODIMM to the other socket and boot it up again. If this seems to work, swap in the other SODIMM and try it in each socket. If all four tests seemed to work, install both SODIMMS again and see if this causes the problem to come back. If at any point you see a failure, you can try using some new SODIMMs and see if they will work. If the new SODIMMs exhibit the same issue(s), then you know that the problem is in the processor or the motherboard. In either case, the result is a dead NUC. Obviously, with the chance of the new SODIMMs not working, you don't want to be purchasing them unless you can return them. Borrow from a friend if you can.

Hope this helps,

Hi Scott,

Thanks for replying. I've been using a single SODIMM since I bought it. I don't have a second adapter to try it due to the lock down in my city, might have to wait for another week for the shops to open. As you mention the noise, I definitely notice there's an increase of noise coming from the fan a lot. And recently I've been using the sleep function. Could that be the trigger to malfunction the ac adapter since it's an old machine? When I start the unit, it will reboot to a menu allows you to choose to boot the computer in a safe mode, normal etc for a few times till it's running normally.

Ok, but one thing you can try is moving this SODIMM to the other socket.

When I say noise, I am referring to electrical noise, not acoustic.

Yes, I tried to swap side. Nothing has changed. Everything it will reboot like it needs to warm up a few times. Thanks for the advice, I will try with the new ac adapter once I got one.

Hi, I tried a different AC adapter, it's not the problem. Now the reboot problem is getting worse. When I start the unit, it will go black screen and no respond so I have to hold the power button to do a hard reboot for a few times. Like it needs a warm up. Again, once the computer is running, it behaves normally. I'm worried it might be the problem with the SSD. It's scary. I'm using the computer every day, I may have time to visit the IT store to check it by next Wednesday. Could you identify or suspect what part of the unit has gone wrong, please?

You mean what failing device can cause this kind of behaviour? There's a very long list I'm afraid. If it has a problem like this, leave the system running all the time - and cross your fingers that it doesn't fail completely before you purchase a replacement for it.
