media server studio HEVC decode & encode

Hello.

I'm currently using Intel Media Server Studio 2014, 2015 Essential Edition.

Trying to transcode HEVC to H264 is success processed.

Is HEVC hardware accelerated decode & encode possible in Essential Edition?

And are 'hardware accelerated' and 'GPU accelerated HEVC plugins' different?

What is the difference if different?

Thanks.

Hi SeongHun,

HEVC hardware accelerated encode is supported starting Media Server Studio Community 2017 and possible on Skylake (6 gen) processors. Please download and install it from here.

Yes, 'Hardware-accelerated' and 'GPU-accelerated' HEVC encoders are different because of using different areas on Intel(R) Processor Graphics:

Hardware-accelerated implementation uses fixed functions (FF) - parts of GPU dedicated for special coding purposes. FF for HEVC encoding exists starting Skylake (6th gen of Intel processors) - HEVC encoding is possible only on Skylake now on Linux and on Skylake and KabyLake on Windows with client Media SDK(not MSS). But to have HEVC encoder on earlier generation of processor (Broadwell) GPU-accelerated plugin was developed. It uses GPU's Execution Units (EUs)  - general purpose cores.

Best wishes,

Anna
