oneAPI VPL performance drop compared to Media SDK

Hi.

I have encountered a serious performance drop while using oneAPI VPL.

My platform is:

  • Dell Inspiron 7506 2n1
  • Windows 10 Home (OS build 19043.1052)
  • oneAPI VPL 2021.6.0
  • CPU 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1165G7
  • GPU Intel(R) Iris(R) Xe Graphics (driver version 30.0.100.9864 / 30.0.100.9894 beta)

 

Test #1

sample_decode.exe h265 -i bitstream.h265 -hw -d3d11

Performance ~2521 fps, GPU utilization 100%

 

Test #2

sample_decode.exe h265 -i bitstream.h265 -hw -d3d11 -api2x_dispatcher

Performance ~890 fps, GPU utilization 44%

 

I also noticed that VPL version creates a giant log file (C:\temp\mfxlib.log), so perhaps this is what reduces performance.

Thank you for posting in Intel Communities. We were unable to reproduce your issue. We've provided our observations below:


1) oneVPL(Version: 2021.4.0 )

Our Observations: 25-30% GPU Utilization & 114.838 fps

Media SDK(Version 2021 R1)

Our Observations: 100% GPU Utilization & 258.956 fps

GPU: Intel(R) UHD graphics(Driver Version: 27.20.100.9466)


2) oneVPL(Version: 2021.6.0)

Our observations: 100% GPU Utilization & 265.939 fps

Media SDK 2021 R1:

Our observations: 100 % GPU Utilization & 387.012 fps

GPU: Intel(R) UHD graphics(Driver Version: 27.20.100.9466)


We could observe no performance drop with oneVPL 2021.6 version. There might be a possibility that this issue is Hardware specific. To work on this issue further, we would like to have the log file you mentioned i.e. "mfxlib.log".

The log is attached to this message.

Probably I have not clearly formulated my message about performance. I meant that the VPL runtime is slower than MediaSDK runtime, which can be observed in your tests as well.
