Hello Intel Support Community,

I am experiencing a persistent issue with my HP EliteBook 860 16-inch G9 with an Intel® Core™ i7-1260P Processor. Despite trying several solutions, virtualization does not work correctly on VMware, VirtualBox, or GNS3.

Problem Description:

  • I am attempting to create a VM in VMware, VirtualBox, and GNS3 with VT-x/EPT enabled.

  • In all three platforms, I receive this error:

System Specifications:

  • Laptop Model: HP EliteBook 860 16-inch G9

  • Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-1260P Processor (Intel Specifications)

  • Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (freshly reinstalled, up-to-date)

  • BIOS Version: (Specify your BIOS version here, found using msinfo32 or wmic bios get smbiosbiosversion)

Troubleshooting Steps Taken:

  1. Enabled all virtualization options in BIOS (Intel VT-x, VT-d).

  2. Verified in Task Manager that Virtualization is enabled.

  3. Updated BIOS to the latest version available for my device.

  4. Disabled Hyper-V, Virtual Machine Platform, and Windows Hypervisor Platform in Windows Features.

  5. Disabled Windows Defender and Firewall.

  6. Disabled Secure Boot in BIOS.

  7. Reinstalled VMware, VirtualBox, and GNS3.

  8. Checked for BIOS and firmware updates.

  9. Completely reinstalled Windows 11 Pro.

Is there something I am missing or any solution for this issue? Could there be a BIOS setting, security option, or patch that could fix this?

Thank you for your help.

Hi @Ahmedben05,

As I review the thread, I can confirm that it is supported. Despite applying the troubleshooting steps, the issue still persists. Many virtualization applications depend on hardware virtualization extensions that are available on most modern processors. It includes Intel VT-x and AMD-V*. Only one software component can use this hardware at a time, and this is by design. The hardware cannot be shared between virtualization applications.

To use other virtualization software, you must disable Hyper-V Hypervisor,* Device Guard*, and Credential Guard*.

To verify if Hyper-V is running and how to disable it, refer to the article Determine whether the Hyper-V hypervisor is running. Before proceeding, I highly recommend seeking assistance from either Microsoft or HP to configure these settings

Hi @RandyT_Intel,

Thank you for your detailed response and the helpful articles you shared. I truly appreciate the time and effort you've put into reviewing my case.

I followed your suggestion and disabled both Hyper-V, Device Guard, and Credential Guard. Additionally, I went ahead and disabled WSL, Hypervisor Platform, Virtual Machine Platform, and Windows Sandbox as well. Unfortunately, despite these changes, the issue still persists.

I was wondering if you have any additional suggestions or troubleshooting steps that might help resolve this issue. Any further guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Once again, thank you for your support. I look forward to your response.

Best regards,
Ahmedben05

Hello,

I managed to solve the problem. Initially, I tried disabling Device Guard, Credential Guard, Secure Boot DMA, and Hyper-V, but the problem persisted. Then, I decided to disable both VT-x and VT-d in the BIOS, saved the changes, and restarted the system. After that, I returned to the BIOS and enabled only VT-x and VT-d. This resolved the issue.

Thank you.
