Please, help me decide which CPU fits best with my application

I'm trying to speed up the processing of the software "Photomodeler", which is devoted to generate 3D models searching the same coded targets or patterns in two or more photographs. I need to speed up that search. What that process does is go throw each image searching the coded targets or patterns.

The people from Photomodeler told me the following:

Does this confirm that I should get an "intel dual core 2" instead of an "intel i7"? Does i7 only work fine with multi-threaded software?

My main question is: being Photomodeler non multi-threaded, is it better to use 4 cores with lower clock frequency (i7) or 2 cores with higher clock frequency (core 2 duo)?

The Architecture and improvements between a Core 2 Duo and i7 are different when comparing clock speed even at stock.

I would suggest the i7 860 which with its Turbo Boost can greatly speed up single threaded workloads.

The i7 will still do the job, prob just as good if not better, but the price..., but i think what the people at Photomodeler are saying is, that it is better to spend your money on an e8400 or the likes instead of paying so much more for an i7. Althoguh saying this and i7 if you have the money would fly, but the program won't get the best out of the CPU. I hope that makes sense

The money is not a big problem. I'm considering this http://www.fnac.es/HP-DV6-2080es-Portatil-15-6-Ordenador-portartil-PC-Portatil/a346464?PID=3384&Mn=-1&Ra=-5000&To=0&Nu=3&Fr=2 laptop (with Intel Core i7-720QM 1,60GHz), which isn't very expensive (999€). That's why my question is: is better that i7 or a faster core 2 duo for speeding up the processing of Photomodeler?

If your question had laptop worded in it I would of never of posted.

Desktop CPU's are faster for this.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that. The computer has to be a laptop because the system will be a mobile one. Would your answer be different considering that the computer is a laptop? Why?

I agree with PeterUK, you really want a desktop for this type of thing. But at the same time we don't know what you are upgrading from.And i don't klnow the progrma as such,,, so can't really be much more help...

I've finally bought the laptop with i7 (it had to be a laptop, I had no choice, it's for a R+D project in which mobility is a requisite). For now it's working really great. Thank you all.
