i9 13900kf overheating at minimal load

I have had my current build since August of 2023, and have not changed anything to it, not even the BIOS.  Have not overclocked the system but have turned XMP on.  Have cleaned the dust from the vents twice.  Build specs:

  • as title says, i9 13900kf
  • 360 CPU water cooler
  • MSI z790 carbon wifi
  • G Skill Trident 5 32mb x2
  • nocturna 4080
  • 3 4gb HP f900 nvme

The system has been running well until 2 days ago.  Used for general office work and games.  Was watching videos and transferring files between the drives and suddenly, BSOD with Clock Watchdog Timeout error.

The system restarted several times and the fans started spinning up and eventually booted up into the logon screen.  Tried typing password, but froze and restarted.

I then went into BIOS settings and there was a CPU at 99 degrees warning.  Cleared CMOS, then that brought temperature down and was able to boot into windows.

Upon checking CPU temp was at 60 celcius when CPU utilization was at 2-3%.  Once CPU utilization increases to around 30% and over, temp instantaneously rises to 99 celcius and throttling occurs, but temp still remains at 99 celcius if utilization doesn't come down.

Can anybody give me an idea as to what is wrong with the system?

Many thanks!!

Hello TheBug2002,

It appears that you are experiencing BSOD issues with the processor. I appreciate your efforts in performing the troubleshooting steps. To properly address this, please share the information below.

1. Are you running a specific application when the issue occurs?

2. Is the issue consistently happening when the system boots up?

Additionally, to have a better understanding of your system configuration and components please generate System Support Utility (SSU) report. Please follow instructions here and send the report - How to get the Intel® System Support Utility Logs on Windows*

I hope to hear from you soon.

Hi Jed,

Thank you for your follow up. To answer your queires:

1. No specific application.  Only when the CPU is active.

2. Yes.  Whenever it boots up and when CPU utilization is over 30%.

Further to my previous post, I have switched out the 360 AIO water cooler with a heat sink fan combo.  The system ran cooler and temperatures did not rise abruptly.  I then further put in a new water cooler, stress tested the system and max temp was 85 celcius.

Thank you for your help.
