i9 14900k Thermal throttle with power limits set

Hi All,

I've seen some recent posts here describing the same issue as I have, but I wanted to get some more information on this.

My setup:

i9 14900k

Deepcool LT720

MSI Z790 Tomahawk Max Wifi

G-Skill DDR5 6400mhz

The power limits are set as followed:

PL1/2 253

-0.100 undervolt

MSI AC/DC 60/80

Whenever I run Prime95, OCCT or Handbrake Video Encoding, the temperatures stick to around 85 degrees in heavy workload, but whenever I export video in Media Encoder, or run a Cinebench benchmark, one or two cores keep triggering the thermal throttle warning in HWiNFO. Everything is hovering between 75/85 degrees but, most often Core 7, it still thermally throttles.

Even when setting PL1/2 to 200, limiting cores to 56/41 multiplier or with just the intel default settings, it keeps popping up.

Is this avoidable, or is this even a serious issue?

Thanks in advance for your help

Hi @FridgeMagnet ,

Did you lower the limit for thermal throttling to 80°C?

I just looked at one screenshot, but the cores did not reach anywhere near 100°C.

I have set the TjMAX to 95 degrees, so if it does thermally throttle its for such a short time, it doesnt get registered
