Silly showstopping software download problem

I am having trouble running the Nios II HW Tutorial's sample application (count_binary) on my board. I have a Nios dev kit board, Stratix edition, with the EP1S10F780C6ES chip and have run many software apps on numerous Nios systems on this board in the recent past.

Now I'm experimenting with Nios II, so I start off with the included tutorial. Generate the system, synthesize the design, and program the device (after which I'm prompted to "Click Cancel to stop using OpenCore Plus IP. Time remaining: unlimited"). No worries so far, all per the tutorials instructions.

I select Run->Run... from the IDE's menu, choose my HW configuration, and take a look at the Target Connection tab:

JTAG cable: automatic <currently: ByteBlaster MV [LPT1]>

JTAG device: automatic <the device which has the processor>

(the other option here is "1 [EP1S25/_HARDCOPY_FPGA_PROTOTYPE]")

Nios II terminal communication device: jtag_uart <stdin/stdout/stderr>

Looks OK, though "JTAG device" is a little suspect, since my device is not an EP1S25. 'jtagconfig --enum' shows one device, the EP1S25, with the same JTAG ID that I see when I successfully program the hardware (0x020030DD).

Click Run and *crunch*:

Using cable "ByteBlasterMV [LPT1]", device 1, instance 0x00

Pausing target processor: not responding.

Resetting and trying again: FAILED

Leaving target processor paused

Hm. Any ideas? I found this answer (http://answers.altera.com/altera/resultdisplay.do?page=http%3a%2f%2fwww.altera.com%2fsupport%2fkdb%2....#goto1050) from Altera's support pages, but that doesn't do me any good, since September 30 (when the Rev B USB cables will be available) is a long way away. http://forum.niosforum.com/work2/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/dry.gif

Did you "click cancel" when prompted?

The Nios II is the "OpenCore Plus IP" that this window is referring to and, as such, requires that you do *not* click cancel.... unless, of course, you enjoy not being able to do or test anything...http://forum.niosforum.com/work2/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif

And I *was* so enjoying not being able to do or test anything! Thanks for ruining my fun! http://forum.niosforum.com/work2/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif

What a ridiculous interface that Cancel button is. Why would I want to stop using IP for which the "time remaining" is "unlimited"? Why make "Cancel" the only way to close the window? Who designed that thing?

I agree. It would be better if it was just explained that if you disconnect your programming cable, you won't be able to do anything useful and your Nios II core will stop functioning in about an hour...

This 'bug' has been slated for fixing in Quartus II version ?. Nios couldn't do anything about it.

We're sorry. At least you got it all figured out.
