nios2-terminal without using the command line tools

I'm looking to create a simple python program with buttons that executes terminal commands, and read back for GUI display. How would one go about this? Are there any resources, documentation, or sample programs? Thanks in advance.

Let me rephrase the question. I just want to be able to communicate (send commands, read back data) with the connect asset similar to nios2-terminal, without using nios2-terminal. Are there sample code that does this, in any programming language?
