Problem Hooking a USB to Serial Adapter to Cyclone V on the go USB

Thanks in Advance. I'm using the Altera Cyclone V Dev. Kit. It has kernel 3.9.0 which seem to support my USB to Serial Adapter. When I plug it in I see the messages in the /var/log/messages: "usb 1-1: new full-speed USB device number 4 using dwc_otg" When I do an "lsusb" I see "Bus 001 Device 4: ID 067b:2303 Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2303 Serial Port." I had to add the device driver for this and recompile the kernel and update the zImage on the microSD card. After I did that I could see that it was included in the /dev directory "ttyUSB0."

But I do not see any activity on the serial port. I've configured it and opened up minicom so I can type and receive data. I have it hooked to another computer with minicom and neither window sees any activitiy.

Does anyone have a suggestion?
