To install a newer processor, the new processor must be socket, chipset, and bios compatible. To determine which processors can be used on a specific motherboard, you must ask the motherboard (or laptop) manufacturer which processors are supported BY THEIR BIOS. Then, you can select from those processors.
Note that this is only possible if the existing processor is not soldered to the motherboard (as in a BGA socket).
