Are processors E5-1680 and D-1540 affected by "Processor May Hang When Executing Code In an HLE Transaction"?

Hi,

Today I've seen the following Xen security advisory:

https://seclists.org/oss-sec/2018/q4/134 oss-sec: Xen Security Advisory 282 v1 - guest use of HLE constructs may lock up host

It states that CPUs with this bug will have a Specification Update listing an erratum with the title "Processor May Hang When Executing Code In an HLE Transaction".

I cannot find the Specification Update for the Xeon E5-1680v4 and Xeon D-1540 CPUs.

Can someone confirm if these CPUs are affected by that erratum, or at least link me to the Specification Updates for those CPUs please?

Thanks,

Andy

Hello,

Thank you so much for contacting us in regards of this concern.

I was reviewing the information provided and there is no official information about the Security Advisory "XSA-282" on our website, yet.

If you would like to know more details and keep up to date on this matter I would like to refer to the following link: https://newsroom.intel.com/ https://newsroom.intel.com.

On the other hand, as an advice I would like to recommend you to make sure that you have installed the latest BIOS Version and if you are using a Linux Operating System to perform a microcode firmware update.

According to the link provided, it is a link not validated by Intel; However, I saw some steps and patches as a workaround of this issue.

We are going to investigate this matter with an upper-level department in order to clarify the information and provide you with the most accurate answer about this concern.

As soon as I will know an update on this, I will let you know.

Best regards,

Emeth O"@

Hi Emeth,

My question hasn't been answered yet, so yes, you could assist by answering my question.

I will rephrase my question so that it does not refer to any document published by anyone other than Intel:

In the following Specification Update there is an erratum entitled "Processor May Hang When Executing Code In an HLE Transaction".

https://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/specification-updates/desktop-6th-gen-core-family-spec-update.pdf https://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/specification-updates/desktop-6th-gen-core-family-spec-upda

I am unable to find Specification Updates for the E5-1680v4 and D-1540 CPUs. Can you tell me if those CPUs are also affected by that erratum?

If you cannot answer that, can you simply tell me where I can find the Specification Updates for the E5-1680v4 and D-1540 CPUs?

Thanks,

Andy

Hello,

I already found the Specification Update of the Intel® Xeon® Processor D-1500, please check the document link below:

https://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/specification-updates/xeon-d-1500-specification-update.pdf

However, let me double check the information for the Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-1680 v4 in order to provide you the most accurate information.

As soon as I will have more details about it I will provide you the outcome.

Best regards,

Emeth O.

Thanks, so just for anyone else searching, the Specification Update for the D-1500 CPUs does not currently contain an erratum called "Processor May Hang When Executing Code In an HLE Transaction".

Thanks, my questions are answered now, as this erratum "Processor May Hang When Executing Code In an HLE Transaction" also does not appear in the Specification Update for the E5 processors.
