Can I upgrade a processor in a BGA socket?

I have a laptop that I want to upgrade to a newer processor. My IT guy says it cannot be upgraded to anything because the processor uses a BGA socket and is soldered to the motherboard.

Is that correct?

Yes, if the processor uses a BGA socket, it cannot be upgraded.

If the processor were not soldered to the motherboard, it might be able to be upgraded. For such an upgrade, the new processor must be socket, BIOS, and chipset compatible. To determine which processors could be used, you must contact the manufacturer of your PC (laptop, I assume) and ask them what processors are supported by their BIOS. Then, you could select from those processors.

But, none of this is applicable since you have a BGA socket.

Hi,

That is correct, if the Laptop uses BGA socket the processor cannot be upgraded.

As Al Hill has mentioned above the processor needs to be socket, BIOS, and chipset compatible to work.

Ivan.
