You will have to ask Apple which processors are supported to determine if the Q9400 is supported.

For future reference: I researched and found that the above processor is compatible with socket LGA775 and is not compatible with my Mac Pro which is socket LGA1366.

Not only must the processor must be socket compatible, it must also be supported by the motherboard's bios (which, in this case, is Apple).
