Can someone explain to me how a 2 core processor (i6-620m) is signifigantly faster than a 4 core processor (i7-920, i7-920 xm, i7-720qm, i7-820qm)

I'm guessing... The quad-core runs on much more power than just 2, so maybe they get too hot when the clock is faster. If you were to run a single core at 2.5 Ghz, wouldn't 4 cores do as much or more processing at a lower speed?
