Can someone explain to me how a 2 core processor is faster than many 4 core processors

I'm guessing... The quad-core runs on much more power than just 2, so maybe they get too hot when the clock is faster. If you were to run a single core at 2.5 Ghz, wouldn't 4 cores do as much or more processing at a lower speed?
