I have a HP notebook running a P6000 1.86 ghz Pentium. Other CPU options are an i5 520 or 540M. The current socket is a PGA988. If I were to source an OEM HP core i5 from the same family, could I replace the CPU. Its the same TDP but the Intel specs do not mention a voltage for the i5. The RAM specs are the same and the GPU is integrated as with the P6000. I'd presume I would need to replace the thermal paste and reinstall the OS. Would the BIOS see the new CPU? There seems little difference between the 520 and 540. I attach the Intel CPU comparison

You must ask HP if the i5-520M or the i5-540M is compatible with their bios.
If so, you "may" be able to simply swap the processor, and you "may not" have to reinstall the OS.
You "may" have to re-enter your OS key.
Sorry, I know this is not a solid answer.
