Hi all and thank you for this great place to discuss Intel I have a dell vostro 3750 with i7 2620 qm processor which has on chip graphics. Our business runs on Ubuntu linux. We have had good performance on our desktops, laptops and server running Ubuntu until the on chip graphics in conjunction with nvidia optimus.
This new notebook with nvidia optimus will not run linux properly because linux technology is behind the curve.
Can I downgrade my i7 to the 1st generation i7 with the same fcpga 988 socket?
Thanks, penguin

Hi,
There are some specifications we need to follow before make any processor's upgrade or downgrade like: processor socket type, voltages and stepping (microcode). The best way to go is get a list of compatible processors for your notebook directly from the system manufacturer (DELL*) to prevent any incompatibility, even though let me give a list of Intel® Core&# 153; i7 mobile Processor 1st with a the socket type 988:

No, you cannot do that. First generation Core i7 processors use different type of socket.

Thank you for your responses. On the weekend I removed my i7740qm processor from my alienware notebook and installed it in my dell vostro 3750 notebook. Both have the 988 socket. Due to the different fsb and other differences it did not work! So that answered that question once and for all. Thanks to all who took the time to answer.
