I am trying to help my son build a computer to be used primarily for Autodesk Maya. Auto desk lists intel dual quad cpu as prerffed. can a dual quad cpu be used in a desktop, I only find them listed under servers?

Try to check for compatible CPUs, you will see that there are desktop boards that supports quad core xeon cpus.
An example will be: Board DX48BT2
