E5-2680 V4 Memory Issues

Hi Everyone

I'm trying to install 2x E5-2680 V4 processors and 8x 8GB DDR4-2400T REG ECC modules in my Z840 workstation and I get five beeps with dimms 1, 3, 6 and 8 for each processor are populated with the single rank 8GB modules when I removed the single rank modules from dimms 1 and 3 for the 2nd processor the system boot fine.

I removed CPU0 (E5-2680 V4) from the motherboard and replaced it with the CPU1 (E5-2680 V4 which in Dual Mode have only one memory controller working with channels 3 and 4) now the system has a single processor and the orientation of that processor has changed as I moved it from socket 2 to socket 1 and also the working channels has changed, with channels 1 and 2 (dimms 1 and 3) populated with identical single rank modules the system boots fine, but when I add more modules to channels 3 and 4 (dimms 6 and I get 5 beeps!

The z840 unit originally had 2x E5-2630 V3 processors with 2x 16GB DDR4-2133P modules populated in the 1st dimm for each processor which worked just fine, also they worked with the 8x 8GB DDR4-2400T modules just fine.

With 2x E5-2680 V4 installed I ran Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool the processors passed all tests with the 2x 16GB DDR4-2133P modules
and then when I ran Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool with 80GB (2x 16GB DDR4-2133P + 6x 8GB DDR4-2400T modules) the system crashed once
with this Bugcheck code: 0x139 (0x3, 0xFFFFEE00A93BF7F0, 0xFFFFEE00A93BF748, 0x0)
Error: KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE
then when I ran it the 2nd time also passed all tests.

also sometimes I get this Bugcheck code: 0xE3 (0xFFFF9402E7CC39F8, 0xFFFF9C070DBE4080, 0xFFFF9402F92B8CC0, 0x2)
Error: RESOURCE_NOT_OWNED
with the 8x 8GB DDR4-2400T modules with the old V3 processors and the 2x 16GB DDR4-2133P modules with the V4 processors

So my question could that be a faculty processor (despite it passed the tests), incompatible/faulty memory , incompatible/faulty motherboard ?!

Hello Ahmed_CG,

Based on the troubleshooting, the documentation and the results of the Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool we have reviewed on this thread, the issue you are experiencing is most likely related to the system board and memory.

In this scenario, our recommendation is that you contact HP* to obtain additional information about these events including hardware compatibility and known issues with memory configurations.

It is worth mentioning that the processor supports DDR4 1600/1866/2133/2400. For this reason, you should not experience CPU failures if you continue to use DDR4 2133.

Hello Ahmed_CG,

Thank you for posting your question on this Intel® Community.

According to the information provided, the probable cause of the issues reported could be the memory configurations, or the type of memory you are using. Our recommendation is that you review the Memory configurations and optimization of the technical white paper for this workstation (Pag 23-25)

https://zworkstations.com/site/assets/files/1044/hp-z840-technical-white-paper.pdf

In page 25, you can find the loading rules for single or dual CPU configurations.

In addition, based on the following HP* support article, when receiving 5 beeps, you can follow these steps to resolve it:

HP Z400/Z600/Z800 Workstation - Diagnostic LED Codes

https://support.hp.com/sg-en/document/c03599666

The Diagnostic LED blinks red 5 times and the system beeps 5 times (once per second), then a 2-second pause follows:

1) Ensure that the memory modules are loaded correctly.

2) Reseat the memory modules.

3) Replace the memory modules one at a time to find the faulty module.

4) Replace the third-party modules with HP memory.

5) Replace the system board.

If the issues persists, you can also make sure the DIMMs you are using have been validated for this specific system. Vendors usually have a list of validated components you can install.

Finally, since you are trying to install a newer processor, using the latest BIOS/firmware is also recommended.

I hope you find this information helpful. Please let me know if the issues persists after following these recommendations.

Thanks a lot for your reply

I have ordered HP DDR4-2400T modules with the part numbers set/recommended  by HP to work with Z840 they didn't arrive yet

in the meanwhile  I have two 16GB DDR4-2133P modules having the part number (752369-581) set/recommended  by HP to work with Z840

The system boots fine with the two 16gb modules but I get 2 BSODs frequently

This was probably caused by the following module: ntoskrnl.exe (nt+0x3F5780)
Bugcheck code: 0xE3 (0xFFFF8E0D370259F8, 0xFFFF8E0D42AB1080, 0xFFFF960A71521AA0, 0x2)
Error: RESOURCE_NOT_OWNED

This was probably caused by the following module: ntoskrnl.exe (nt+0x3F5780)
Bugcheck code: 0x139 (0x3, 0xFFFFEE00A93BF7F0, 0xFFFFEE00A93BF748, 0x0)
Error: KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE
file path: C:\Windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

Then I have installed a fresh copy of windows 10 and ran Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool which passes all tests, and then I ran OCCT 7.2.5 for a couple of passes I get a notification about 1 WHEA Error

Event Viewer Log:

A corrected hardware error has occurred.

Component: Memory
Error Source: Unknown Error Source

Then I tried each CPU in a single processor configuration with 4x 8GB modules (p/n 809079-581)
the 1st CPU works fine with all of the 4 Channels populated
The 2nd CPU works fine with channels 3 and 4 only, if I populate channels 1 and 2 I get the 5 beeps error

Then I tried each CPU in a single processor configuration with a 16gb module (p/n 752369-581)
the 1st CPU works fine with Channel 1 populated
The 2nd CPU works fine with Channel 1 populated

Then I tried dual CPU configuration the system boots fine with the two 16gb modules  with both Channels 1 populated,  the 2nd CPU might have a faulty memory controller/works only with DDR4-2133P modules ?!

I'm waiting for the DDR4-2400T arrival to make sure
both processers have the same identical specs but are of different batches!

Hello Ahmed_CG,

Thank you for the update.

Please let us know if the issue persists after installing DDR4-2400T memory modules.

To rule out a hardware issue, please let us know if you are following the population guidelines found on the following source (Page 25) - Attachment.

Although one of the processors could be faulty, this seems to be a memory configuration/compatibility issue. However, it is important to note that the WHEA stop code usually occurs due to some type of hardware failure including processors and memory modules.

It is worth mentioning that Intel recommends using the Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool to test the health of Intel® Processors.

Also, have you installed Windows* 10 on this system before without experiencing this types of issues? According to the HP Z840 Workstation Product Specifications, it seems that Windows* 10 is not supported.

Thanks a lot for your reply

My unit was produced on 25th week of 2016 I according to Quickspecs in the following link it supports windows 10

https://cdn.competec.ch/documents/4/5/453141/Quickspecs_en_Z840_Workstation_Mai_2016.pdf

The issue persists after installing DDR4-2400T memory modules with part numbers specified by HP to be compatible with my unit

Yes I populate channels according to the attached memory population rules

I have tried  each of the following modules in dual processor configuration:

populating the 1st dimm for each processor

 2 x 4GB 1Rx8 DDR4-2400T REG ECC p/n 809078-581      I get 5 beeps

 2 x 8GB 1Rx8 DDR4-2400T REG ECC p/n 809080-591      I get 5 beeps

 2 x 4GB 1Rx8 DDR4-2400T REG ECC  p/n 809082-591     I get 5 beeps

One of the processors in single configuration mode works fine with all compatible and non compatible DDR4-2400T modules with  all channels populated

the other one only works with channels (1 & 2) in single configuration mode (DDR4-2400T modules)

and channels (3 & 4) in dual configuration mode (DDR4-2400T modules)

also with (DDR4-2133P modules 2x 16GB in the 1st dimm for each processor) both processors work fine in dual configuration mode

The conclusion is one of the memory controllers of CPU2 runs only or can handle 2133

I wish to understand what I'm dealing with, why it only runs at 2133 ?!

is it due to different batch numbers of the processors ?!

if I continue to run both processors with 2133p modules  overtime will CPU2 fail completely or just the memory controller with the issue will fail, while the other one continues to work ?!

Intel® Processor Diagnostic Tool passes all tests & both IMCs are OK according to it!

Thanks a lot for your reply & great support on my case

I know that both processors support 2133, just I was under the assumption the 2nd processor is failing, given that one of it's IMCs can only operate at 2133

The processor that works fine in both CPU sockets, with all the DDR4-2400T modules I have tested,

The 2nd to 4th characters of it's FPO are 629  (29th week of 2016)

the another processor with the issue, 752  (52nd  week of 2017)

Is that correct about 2nd to 4th characters of a processor's FPO are the date of manufacturing ?!

Could that be the cause, more than a year between the manufacturing date of CPU1 and CPU2 !  I mean not a matching pair! or that's irrelevant ?!

Hello Ahmed_CG,

You can use the batch number (FPO) to check the warranty status of your Intel Processor. However, the FPO is not useful to determine if a processor is functional.

My recommendation is that you review the system board documentation or contact HP* to obtain additional details about the Processor Population Rules. This usually varies depending on the platform you are using, but here are a few examples that you may take into account when using dual-processor configurations:

• Both processors must have the same number of cores.

• Both processors must have the same cache sizes for all levels of processor cache memory.

• Both processors must support identical DDR4 memory frequencies.

• Both processors must have identical extended family, extended model, processor type, family code and model number.

I hope you find this information helpful.

Hello
I have tested the E5-2680 v4 (2017 batch) processor that had one memory controller working @2400 in the Z840
In a Dell precision T7810 (2017 production with bios v A34) it works with 4 channels populated with DDR4-2400T modules, no beeps, was able to get into bios but didn't test further.
It seems Dell has made a much better job with the latest bios update for the T7810
Also it's worth mentioning that with bios version A17 the system didn't boot at all with the E5-2680 v4

E5-2680 V4 (2016 Batch) and (2017 Batch) sure something has changed!
I Hope HP will respond and release a bios update that solves the issue
